Maine rejects Wilson era policies in a solid party shift overturning earlier support. Voters indicate a strong GOP trend that could presage similar results in Texas where the presidency’s plan faces opposition.
Portland reports Maine Republicans sweep the state election with Carl Milliken leading governor race by 13,355 over Akley Curtis. Hale and Farnald win seats in the senate, while Republicans secure a solid delegation to Congress. Guardsmen on the border cast 470 votes, 300 for Milliken.
Secretary Daniels announced in Washington that Maine returns showed a Democratic victory. He noted Republicans previously held a 50 000 majority but the margin was reduced to about 15 000.
Maine elects Gov Milliken and two U S Senators amid record turnout and a reunified Republican Progressive coalition. Frederick Hale defeats Curtis Johnson. Bert Bernard wins short term Senate seat as vote totals near 150000 with Progressives largely backing Republicans. Maine’s history making first popular vote for two senators noted.

Shanghai reports new minister of justice Chang Yao Tsing from Yunnan province linked to a massive opium smuggling ring. Police found trunks with 7000 pounds of opium worth about half a million, seized on warrants targeting several suspects. cabinet tensions rise amid the probe.
Salt Lake City urged voters to approve bonds for a new water system to address rapid growth and past fire losses. The board of fire underwriters stresses enhanced protection and lower future rates if the project proceeds. A vote is planned for next Thursday.

In Dubuque on September 12 Allen and EK Benson addressed Germania hall and attacked President Wilson over the railroad controversy. Benson described Wilson’s moves as political and predicted two million Socialist votes this year versus 900,000 last year, ahead of Liberal gains.
