Allied bombardment reaches fifth straight day with carrier raids from Palau to the Philippines. Land based air strikes target Formosa, Halmahera, and the Celebes as the crescent shaped assault tightens around Japanese held Mamitawae.
Allied advances press toward Dijon as French forces seize Dijon city and American Seventh Army nears Vesoul, closing the Belfort gap. Patch’s troops move toward Rougemont while French units push from the Jura toward the Swiss border amid German rearguard resistance.
Lt. Gen Joseph Pierre Koenig announced a broadcast communique that French forces of the interior have captured more than 12,230 Germans in four districts of France and secured significant war booty. The totals include 5,030 in upper Savoy 5,000 in the Lyon area 1,200 in Coreze and the remainder in Aube.
German radio said a Nazi block runner was scuttled in the Indian Ocean to avoid capture. Of 140 crewmen, 136 were reported rescued by a lifeboat crew and landed at an unidentified port 11 days later.

Eight year old Lelan Ted Pope, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlan C. Pope, died in Utah Valley Hospital from internal injuries after a horse kicked him Friday night while he was driving the animal into a corral. Family members reported the incident.
