The nation watched as Maine voted on amending the constitution to repeal national prohibition. With 25 states already approving, Colorado Minnesota and Maryland were set to vote next, as 36 states must approve for the 21st Amendment to take effect.
Portland polls open in Maine for delegation to repeal convention and four state referenda. Early reports show strong tilt toward delegates pledged for repeal with about 5200 votes cast by noon. Antirepeal leaders warn repeal could threaten over 75 years of state prohibition if Maine joins other states in disapproval.

Rescue crews from the U S Bureau of Mines assisted as investigators planned.

Police recovered the two men’s bodies from the lake. one man was possibly H. W. Spud Manning, a famed parachute performer, and the other pilot Charles Otto.
President Roosevelt set conditions for recognizing Cuba’s Raul Grau San Martin government based on popular support and maintaining order. Navy forces remained in position around Cuba while the administration avoided intervention, awaiting the people’s choice.
Santa Cruz California September 11 police sought motive in the killing of Francis Joseph Morgan Grace Sr a 43 year old retired capitalist. Nurse Frida Weltz admitted planning the crime since discharge from Grace and said she had good reasons to kill him but would not share them. District Attorney Frank Murphy quoted her saying there was no romance and that a scandal rumor was not the real reason.
In Havana on September 11, 300 former army officers pressed Ramon Gray San Martin to step aside for Carlos Manuel de Cespedes as unrest grows. In Santiago, bands threaten revolt aiding merchants to close their shops while army officers refuse duties. In Central Park, 5000 critics denounce the new regime and oppose Yankee influence.
In Ripley West Virginia on September 11, Rev. A. M. Eddy and his wife were beaten and shot to death at their Grace Fork home. The minister’s son Ralph, 16, is missing with the family car. a borrowed shotgun was found at the scene. A motive remains unclear.
