Chicago reports railroad unions representing 1,000,000 non operating workers launch a wage increase drive and demand a 40 hour week and a 25 cent raise. Leaders cite current earnings 56 to 67 dollars weekly, urging parity with other industries as talks with railroads begin.
Pocatello authorities and sheriff's deputies search for a red headed 17-year-old clerk and an AWOL U S Marine after a party near a roadside tavern. A second teen at the gathering also left with them as they reportedly planned to marry, leaving officials unsure if they face nuptials or juvenile delinquency.
Pocatello group Chew-and-Chat, the Knife and Fork club, announces its first dinner on Sept. 28 with Lavern C. Johnson as president. Kumar Goshal, an Indian authority, will speak on India and the World Peace. The group meets at 11:30 a.m. Thursday to select their February speaker. Officers include Johnson, Bohrer, Atkin, Rev. Ed Cunningham, George N. Green, Captain Walter E. Brown, Trilby Anderson, Arthur Peterson, Himena Hoffman, and secretary Thelma B. Crowell.
Boise fire dispatcher Lynn Knight says a good downpour could end the high fire potential, but the Weather Bureau forecasts fair, warmer weather with very low humidity for the rest of the week. A single rainstorm could finish the fire hazard season and ease forest service operations until next summer.

Wholesale prices for basic foods fell to the lowest level since April 27 reported by Dun and Bradstreet, with declines in butter lard flour beef cheese sugar and coffee. The drop, led by butter, has lasted four weeks and is expected to bring lower consumer prices soon. Retailers said prices would drop promptly, while cautious buying may continue. Livestock prices were steady to higher, with hogs down slightly at some markets.

The plan, drafted by Frank Fullmer and the Chamber of Commerce committee, includes a council member and school board representative among appointees. The measure was referred to City Attorney H William Furchner for review ahead of the next council meeting.
City officials report rapid progress on the Pocatello memorial pool with an inspection due Monday and dedication planned for Thursday or Friday if all specs are met. If water and heating testing proceed, local swimmers may plunge soon as funds are sought through a charity midnight matinee on Sept 25 at the Chief Theatre featuring Tyrone Power.
G Nicholas Ifft, local publisher, elected Wednesday as school trustee zone 3. Of 173 votes cast he received 170, his name the only on the official ballot. Write-ins each tally a single vote for F E Tydeman Harry Thurston and Grant L Stowell. Lavern C Johnson chairs the board. members include Grant L Stowell clerk Clarence Stephenson Edwin DeKdy and Ifft. Ifft has served four years on the board in prior stints.

Barrett and Fry of Pocatello among the 30 hunters selected from 481 applicants. Other area winners include Richards, David, Gardner, Ball, Paschke, Amen, Reicher, Shelby, Higgins, Dolan, and Marsh.
The Canadian cost of living index edged up six tenths of a point in July, the smallest monthly increase in a year. The index reached 157.5, per the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday.
Soviet fighter planes crisscrossed Berlin air corridors as the United States and France protested the seizure of 19 west sector policemen. Col. Howley and Gen. Koenig delivered sharp protest notes to Soviet commanders amid ongoing seven meetings to lift the Berlin blockade.

Final plans for the North Bannock Fair and Race Meet are nearly ready as officials report strong entries and expected crowds. The event runs Friday to Saturday at Bannock county fair grounds north of Pocatello with committees led by Bob Hillman and Glen Kunkel.

Herman Talmadge leads Gov. M. E. Thompson in Georgia Democratic primary returns from 674 of 1734 precincts. Talmadge shows 114,986 votes to 99,122 for Thompson, with Talmadge capturing 258 unit votes to Thompson’s 76, needing 206 to win.
A charge of unfair labor practices was filed against the New York teamsters union as an eight day strike threatens to cripple the city. The employers labor committee seeks an NLRB ruling under the Taft Hartley Act to obtain an injunction against the striking truck drivers.
The Pocatello Community Chest revealed its executive committees for the drive at a Hotel Bannock meeting on Wednesday night. Chest Chairman C. Ed Flandro named 66 members, with Harold Ory and Stanley M. Day leading two teams, Day as executive chairman under Flandro and Ory heading the other group including Harold Read and J. L. Craig among many volunteers.
