County and state tax levies were set at 1.68 dollars per hundred, up from 1.38 last year. A two mill emergency airport development levy was debated after a long meeting with taxpayers and utility representatives.
Kiwanis members viewed the sound film Singing Wheels highlighting trucking in America and national defense. Chet Moulton of Boise presented the film with Shipley Burton of Salt Lake City giving remarks on Idaho and national truck statistics and the industry’s tax contributions. Burton noted 20,800 Idaho drivers and 3,739,000 nationwide, plus school transport figures and interstate freight shares handled by private firms. Joe Cotant led the program with Spencer Ford presiding, and Ed Bogert is slated to lead next week. President James Brady attended as a guest.
Sara Delano Roosevelt was laid to rest at the family plot in Hyde Park after private home services. President Franklin D. Roosevelt attended as the mahogany casket was lowered beside his father James Roosevelt’s grave amid prayers and familiar faces.
Idaho Farm Bureau officials announced leaders for commodity group discussions at the state conference to be held September 20 at the Bannock hotel in Pocatello. About 125 group heads from across the state are expected to attend the meeting featuring tax irrigation transportation cattle dairying wool growing and other topics with invited speakers from the University of Idaho extension and the public utilities commission.
The forecast calls for considerable cloudiness with occasional light showers and cool conditions. Highs reach around 70, lows near 51, averaging 56, well below the normal 63, with travel hints of light showers around Lewiston and Moscow in north Idaho.

Miss Nina Varian, daughter of Bertram S. Varian the former Idaho chief justice, wed Lamoyne A. Jones, confidential secretary to District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey, at Christ Methodist church on Park Avenue. Mrs Wendell L Willkie attended the ceremony. Jones was a Willkie campaign press aide.
Washington reports that the United States paid out 1.172 billion dollars in August for completed defense orders. This brings total expenditures since July 1, 1940 to 9.282 billion dollars, marking the largest monthly and cumulative defense outlays to date.
Teheran reports Iran accepted British Russian peace terms surrendering German Italian Hungarian and Romanian legations and delivering axis nations to British and Soviet authorities. The accord sets British and Russian occupation zones in Iran near oil fields and Tehran with Iran to provide rail facilities for supplies to Russia. Parliament endorsed the agreement citing no alternative for Iran.
Rep Martin Dies chairman of the House American Activities Committee charges Leon Henderson price administrator and four other men connected with the OPM with Communist affiliations. Henderson denies ever belonging to any communist dominated group and Dies seeks Henderson's immediate dismissal.
State department reports 24 crew missing after torpedoing of a Danish ship flying Panama flag on Aug 17 about 300 miles southwest of Iceland. Only three survivors, one American. Sinking follows attack on US Steel Seafarer in Red Sea. U.S. eyes Roosevelt address hinting at forceful response on the high seas.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Tucker welcomed a daughter Monday evening at St. Anthony hospital. Also reported are daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Haybal of 339 1-2 South Third and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Carl of Salmon, announced Tuesday at the same hospital.

Soviet dispatches claim eight Nazi divisions totaling about 120,000 men were destroyed near Moscow in a 26 day battle. The drive pushed German forces 16 miles and recaptured 150 square miles including 50 villages as Russians pursue retreating troops toward Smolensk.
The advance gifts committee of Pocatello's Community Chest met at the Hotel Whitman to launch the drive. Campaign Chairman E Norman Vaughn announced plans and assigned cards. The regular campaign runs October 6 to 13 with a $20000 goal. Headquarters are in Hotel Bannock room 203 with Chest director Thelma Crowell available for consultations and contributions.
Seven hundred officers and men of the 76th field artillery brigade detachment, led by Lt. Col. Frank E. Meek of Caldwell, spent the night in Twin Falls as they travel from Fort Lewis to Fort Francis E. Warren. The first unit passed Pocatello at 11 30 a.m. and the troops were guests at a military ball.
Secretary Wickard announced a 1942 farm program aiming at the largest output in American agricultural history to meet growing domestic and allied needs. Goals emphasize pork, eggs, dairy, vegetables, cheeses, poultry and oil crops, while maintaining rigid controls on cotton wheat and tobacco. The plan foresees expanded exports to Britain and others, lifting sugar production limits and mobilizing farmers through regional conferences across Salt Lake City Chicago New York and Memphis.
