Charles Reeves switches plea from not guilty to guilty in district court, admitting felony of receiving stolen property and facing penitentiary sentence. Judge Budge to receive the plea tomorrow morning amid related civil actions and divorce proceedings.
City schools reopen with large enrollment expected for the new term. Principal T. S. Risser and staff assignments listed for High School and East School, including teachers for German Latin English and various grade sections.
John Ellis will become chief of police in Pocatello succeeding John McManus who resigned. He will start September 15 after completing prior commitments. Ellis previously ran for Bannock County sheriff and was defeated by David Quigley. The post had been expected for patrolman D F Myers and was briefly offered to Frank Wilson.
A Saturday blaze in Ogden started by a defective wire gutted Marnott's grocery and Cave drug store, with total losses exceeding 35 000. The drug store carried 15 000 in stock and 5 000 in fixtures, and the building suffered 5 000 damage. The grocery store lost 8 000 and a nearby tenement house 20 000 in furniture, with Lemp's saloon also damaged.
Eighteen jurors appeared for the Reeves burglary term when Clerk Gallet called roll. Names included Moses Christensen Ole Olson George Gasser William Mecham Gus Sahlberg Patrick Rush E J Turner Sr John P Bright A C Garthwaite Hyrum Kay William Francis David Balfour Charles E Croshaw D A Banks Ed Murphy John Lloyd Henry Henderson Theodore Swanson. Several jurors were excused and the panel was discharged until 10 o clock tomorrow morning after the settlement of the Reeves burglary case.
Secretary of State Root travels from Muldoon’s institute where he rests recovering. He has gained twelve pounds and says he feels like a new man after the health improvement.

At sunset last evening the Jewish world began Rosh Hashanah the New Year festival. It marks year 1668 on the Hebraic calendar and is observed with abstinence from business and labor. Consequently all Jewish stores in Pocatello are closed today.

A Tokio dispatch reports the cruiser Chattanooga at Hakodate where four sailors narrowly avoided injury by a mob. Two swam to the ship and two were saved by police. An investigation found one sailor had flashed an eye at a shopkeeper who attacked the group. the Japanese assailants were exonerated.
The Gem State Mining Company of this city is formed with W. A. Hyde as president and George Gray as secretary. It controls 24 claims on the Fort Hall area including the Gold Belt and Pappoose mines, with options on two more. Capital is one million dollars, shares at one dollar, and 10,000 shares offered at 10 cents for development. Work begins on the Gold Belt vein and a second fissure vein, with surface assays showing gold silver copper and lead. The Gold Belt tunnel is 175 feet long and overseen by experienced miner Mr. Kellow.
Honolulu dispatch quotes Longworth son in law of the president saying Roosevelt will not seek renomination unless the country demands it. The statement comes as political debate rises in New York on September 9.
P L Williams, general attorney for the Oregon Short Line, left Salt Lake City for Denver to defend the line in a $10,000,000 suit by the administrator of Charles Durkee, former Utah territory governor, who claimed ownership of the line’s first mortgage bonds. The U S district court in Salt Lake dismissed the case and an appeal was filed with the Eighth Circuit.
The Ninth Annual Stake Conference of the Young Men's and Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement associations of the Pocatello stake convened at the L D S church. Three sessions were held with about 150 visitors from outside points and 500 attending the evening joint meeting. Elder Briant S. Hinckley and Mrs. May Booth Talmage attended with local stake officers. talks covered developing a gospel testimony among youth and various papers on ethics and religious education.
