Detectives report a fresh wave of hot checks totaling over 300 dollars in Pocatello. The Idaho State Police Officers Association urges merchants to verify local checks, thumbprint policies, and direct bank calls to curb the crime.
A CIO union spokesman said a strike date of September 17 is set against Western Electric unless a new wage contract is agreed. The walkout could halt telephone communications nationwide. The union claims 25,000 workers in 45 states.
Boise tax official J R Wiley reminded Idaho taxpayers that September 15 marks the deadline for third period estimated income tax payments for 1948. He noted about 12,000 Idaho farmers merchants and business men are paying on estimates and that revisions are due if income varied.

The city jail was crowded after Labor Day with about 50 offenders in a Tuesday Police Court session. Traffic violations topped the list at 24, with 14 cited for drinking too much. No fatalities occurred, but injuries rose from last year as residents streamed home after holidays.
Preliminary figures show nearly 2000 Idaho men signed up August 30 for the peacetime draft. About 1016 men born in 1922 registered the first day and 860 born in other years filed cards. Officials warn totals may change as some boards report from remote areas.
A three day Labor Day weekend toll totaled 492 deaths, with 297 in auto crashes and 60 drownings among the rest. California led with 34 fatalities, Texas 31, and North Dakota reported no violent deaths. Public officials attributed the dip from July 4 figures to fear of travel.

Idaho motorists have purchased nearly 5000 new cars this year despite shortages. R G Cole of the Idaho Automobile Association cites state registration data showing June 30 totals at 136,838 and a projection that 1948 will surpass 1947's 140,000 registrations.
Boise readers learn Power county owners of the Last Frontier club seek a court injunction to halt state official R. C. Lewis from revoking their liquor license. The dispute centers on Batise village status and 125 resident threshold under law. The case challenges authority to revoke license pending higher court ruling.
Hollywood star Robert Mitchum faces two narcotics counts after a grand jury indicted him and three others for possession and conspiracy in a movieland dope den. If guilty Mitchum could face six years in San Quentin though probation may be possible on the conspiracy count.
A 17 year old girl, Eileen Morrison, remains partially conscious after a head on collision with a truck. Her badly crushed body was recovered from the Morrison car a week and three days after the crash. Her father, two sisters and another relative were killed. Hospital attendants report her condition is the best since admission.
Butter prices declined in New York to 75 cents a pound the year’s low. Chicago wholesale butter fell to 34.2 cents, top grade at 72 cents. Meat cuts in a New York supermarket dropped up to 16 cents a pound for lamb veal and pork while beef fell earlier. Hogs and sheep held or rose.
Herman Talmadge and Gov. M E Thompson renew their battle as Georgia voters decide the outcome. The 1947 dispute left rival administrations after the death of Eugene Talmadge, shaping a turbulent political struggle in the state.
Julia Pullos 53 wife of Nick Pullos of 431 South Sixth Ave died after a weeklong illness. A Greek Orthodox Church member she was born Julia Kamarinos in Amalias Greece on July 20 1895. Survived by husband two sons Dan and Sam Pullos of Pocatello two daughters Mrs Sam Gi an os of Salt Lake City and Mrs Sarantos of Pocatello one brother Spiro Kamarinos Greece and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Downard Mortuary.
Idaho tour by Rep. Ben F. Jensen leads a one man subcommittee mission through Boise valley Owyhee and Black Canyon reclamation sites. Jensen advocates continued federal irrigation work to expand usable farmland as U S population grows toward 160 million by 1960.
Two young gunmen, Dale Simpson and H E Miller, surrendered after walking into a country store with four pistols and asking to be arrested. They had earlier killed Detective Nicholas Jacobs and kidnapped a man, then fled toward Baton Rouge before being captured by state policeman L E Wright in New Orleans.
A Tyhee area farm home burned Tuesday noon after Mrs. Durfee used gasoline to wash clothes. The Durfee family of five escaped injury as neighbors formed bucket brigades but could not stop the blaze, which ruined their two month old 40 acre farm. Losses included an electric range refrigerator beds and most belongings with minimal insurance coverage.
Nine year old Larry Thompson, recovering from his second polio attack, rested in the Elks convalescent home as he boasted of a remarkable harvest. He planted 12 hills of potatoes and this week produced a two pound irregular potato formed from ten joined tubers. He noted excessive water caused the growth.
Chicago authorities report four killed and 17 injured when a starch making machine exploded at the Brach candy plant. The blast tore through the top floor during early hours, with 32 workers present and 11 escaping. One critically burned victim not expected to survive.
