The OPA plans a winter drive to trap big operators by using minor violators as informants. Deputy administrator George Moncharsh said a corner butcher selling black market meat may get leniency if he reveals suppliers. The crackdown aims to curb rising meat costs and anticipated shortages after price ceilings lapse.
Washington reports the third underwater atomic bomb test scheduled for next spring is indefinite as officials cite accumulated data from five prior blasts. President Truman and advisers determined the exact timing is not necessary at this time and the decision centers on the near future.
The U S Navy will convert the 45000 ton battleship Kentucky and the 27000 ton battle cruiser Hawaii into guided missile warships. Weather planes and radio stations were alerted by the army air forces to guide the B-29 Pacusan Dreamboat on a 10000 mile flight from Honolulu to Cairo across the North Pole. Thomas Orrin Howell, 68, night watchman at a sugar plant, died after his bicycle collided with a truck driven by Melvin Rigby at an intersection in Preston Idaho. Deputy Sheriff Bill Dursteler charged Rigby with driving without a license.
