At least 300 Chinese noncombatants were killed and 400 injured today when Japanese bombers hit Sungkiang station near Shanghai. A 1,500 refugee train was blown from its track, with two second class and three third class cars wrecked. The attack followed broader Sino-Japanese hostilities over Shanghai and security concerns for foreigners.
In Madison the Grand Army of the Republic officers oppose displaying the Confederate Stars and Bars at next year’s 75th anniversary Gettysburg reunion. G A R will decide in private whether to participate, with commander C H William Ruhe of Pittsburgh stressing the union flag only. The question has lingered since 1935 when the invitation sparked debate.
Chinese machine gun fire from western hill positions halted a southern Japanese push toward Peiping and destroyed detachments attempting to clear the road. Chinese resistance signaled Japan’s continued difficulty in subduing the area as heavy casualties and entrenched mountain positions limited the advance. More than 1,000 Japanese soldiers were hospitalized from the setback and a large but uncertain number of Americans in Peiping were urged to evacuate unless essential.

Thunder showers halted Ab Jenkins' 350.11 mile speed trial at Bonneville Utah. He claimed 16 world records including an hour run at 177.05 mph and a 200 mile average of 177.43 mph before rain ended the attempt. He planned to resume if weather permits.
Arguments in three cases from eastern Idaho districts were heard today by the Idaho Supreme Court. Cases include Minnie Louk versus George E. Patton and Laura M. Howell, Eliza Evans versus Dan J. Cavanagh and the state insurance fund, and Jefferson county case ReMay against Commercial Standards Ins. Co. Also a meeting of the Pocatello Lodge of Perfection Scottish Rite Masons is set for Sept 23 to discuss the fall reunion for November 14 to 17 and quicentennial Constitution observances.
Sir George Hubert Wilkins resumes duty at his Barter Island base off the Alaska coast after another unsuccessful mission seeking six Soviet transpolar fliers who vanished August 13 during a Moscow to Fairbanks and Oakland flight across the Arctic.
A Wabash railroad passenger train bound from Detroit to St Louis with 200 aboard derailed on a curve near Fort Wayne Indiana. One engineer David Karicofe 65 of Detroit died as the locomotive plunged into a ditch. Five others were injured and several more bruised but not hospitalized. Cause of the accident was not determined.
Two year old Jack Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Howard, was fatally injured in Marsing when he fell from the cab of the truck his father was driving and was run over. The incident occurred yesterday.
Berlin reports Adolf Hitler will answer the Anglo French invitation to Friday's conference on anti piracy measures at Nyon Switzerland. The event gathers the major powers to discuss safeguarding shipping lanes.
Margaret Drennan, 20, a Perth Amboy student known as the lady in red, confessed after hours of questioning to fatally shooting Paul Reeves, 25, when he allegedly attacked her in his Woodbridge Township home. She was charged with murder and held without bail.
Chamber of Commerce board issues an invitation to Harrison C. Dale and Mrs. Dale as guests at a future date. The chamber will send a delegation to Montpelier for the first government supervised hearing on Idaho phosphate development. President Charles Gibson calls a Thursday 8 PM meeting at the chamber of commerce to discuss a proposed elk shoot on the Pocatello preserve. The state camp department has approved killing 100 elk to thin the herds as forestry services cite limited feed.
The Rev. E. T. Ferry, new pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will address the Rotary club at the noon meeting Thursday at the Bannock hotel. Viola Carnes and Anna Furbush will play accordion duets.
Loyalist forces in the Franco Spanish frontier reported a sharp turn in the fight near Gijon. In a coastal battle about four miles west of Llanes, they killed over 100 insurgent troops and routed the advance guard after exhausting ammunition in a hand to hand melee. The Saranaca battalion and Basque remnants had fortified the coast road from Santander to halt the attackers. The clash followed 13 days of retreat by government defenders who then scored a decisive victory.
Edgar Hoover announced the FBI is pursuing doctors who cooperated with underworld figures. He denied links to the Charles Mattson kidnapping and murder. Hoover recalled past prosecutions of physicians aiding gangsters in illegal activities and said current focus is on doctors treating women in white slavery.
