A coal controller plan to conserve winter coal supplies begins Monday across 22 GB areas. It aims to cut long-distance transport, saving about 700 million ton miles by transporting coal as near to producing points as possible.
A board of army officers has been appointed to devise methods and systems for transporting American troops by sea. The forthcoming recommendations will be confidential. Submarine threats require an effective convoy system to safeguard transports across the Atlantic.
In Philadelphia on September 8 an explosion at the Frankford Arsenal killed three workers and injured twenty three. Investigators say accidental cause due to worker carelessness in drying primer caps and shells. Fire spread to nearby buildings causing about $30,000 in damage. Federal and local officers investigate.
In Paul Minnesota a park encounter with a vicious bear left two men in hospital. Joseph Rothwell and Superintendent Ernest Engelking were dragged into the bear’s cage after Rothwell’s hat fell into the enclosure. The bear was shot to rescue them.
Grace Cogewell daughter of Ledyard Cogswell and Edward Wales Root son of Elihu Root were married at Fernbrook, home of Senator Henry Sage, in Albany. Grace Cogswell’s father leads Albany’s New York State National Bank and Mr Root will join work tied to national defense in Washington after November.
