In Santo Domingo after a devastating hurricane the death toll rises past 4 000 with an estimated total possibly 5 000. One eighth of the population is dead and thousands more are injured as refugees flood in and emergency facilities fill.
Mexico City reports that the government filed a petition in the sixth district court to nationalize Methodist Episcopal church property in Mexico. The action signals a drive to place Protestant church properties on the same footing as the Catholic church, with 14 Mexico City buildings cited. Other Protestant groups may face similar steps as the case proceeds.
Raton New Mexico September 6 state police and a Colorado National Guard plane hunted for Ray Sutton a dry agent missing nine days. Federal prohibition chief Charles Stearns said the search would continue with officers and volunteers resuming Sunday aided by Lt Cecil Braddick. A new theory suggested temporary derangement but officials discount it noting no clues have surfaced.
American Ambassador Fred M. Dearing said after talks with Peru's foreign secretary that Lt. Minander Harold B. Grow and Charles W. Sutton would be freed soon if they agree to stand trial. The government would release them from prison upon such agreement as arrival in Lima neared.

Jim Davis of Columbus Ohio won the five mile race opening the 1930 national championship at the Syracuse New York fair. His time 3 41 68 lowered his own world mark from 3 47 42 set last year on the same track.
The Bureau of Highways calls for bids to gravel surface 12 miles of the Nez Perce highway from Craigmont to Kamiah in Lewis county. Bids to be opened in Boise on September 16.
A Sept 6 dinner in Bar Harbor Maine honored Jane Addams of Hull House Chicago at age 70. Attendees included John D. Rockefeller Jr Henry Morgenthau Robert M Hutchins Arthur Henderson and Richard Cabot who lauded her work with poverty stricken children and universal humanity. Addams urged world peace and noted renewed congressional discussion.
Washington dispatch says 87,000 World War I veterans who served in the First Division are urged to gather in Washington for an October 23 to 25 reunion. General Summerall notes the division’s notable combat record and casualties, honoring fallen comrades and strengthening bonds among living veterans.
Gov Huey P Long and District Attorney John E Fleury of Jefferson parish along with six other state officers were charged in a federal writ of habeas corpus alleging conspiracy to kidnap Sam Irby and James Terrell while they were wards of East Baton Rouge district court. The writ demands delivery of the two men in open court Monday morning. Irby and Terrell are said to be confined in Jefferson parish jail after being seized in Shreveport.
Alta Fickle twenty year old in Pacific Grove California shoved her right arm under a racing passenger train to stop what she believed would be a murder. The arm was severed above the elbow. She spoke of deadly impulses and claimed to feel no remorse as doctors treated her for shock.
According to Echo de Paris correspondent in Nancy at least ten people were killed and many seriously injured by an explosion at a mine powder factory in Aubous near Brisy.
Coste and Maurice Bellonte land in New York after a six and a half hour flight from Louisville. They earned $25,000 for the Easterwood prize and plan a Washington welcome from President Hoover. They rest in a Park Avenue hotel before tomorrow’s engagements.
In Panama City on September 6, rumors spread that the cabinet had resigned but President Arosemena said he had received no resignation. The dispute centers on Jeptha B. Senator William E Borah arrives in Boise for a prolonged Idaho stay saying he will not campaign outside the state before the election. He plans three weeks rest then campaign planning in Idaho with cooperation from the state ticket and will discuss prohibition and tariff policy. He also comments on France ordering Hearst to leave and on Woodcock’s prohibition enforcement appointment.
Aviators and officials will greet Dieudonne Coste and Maurice Bellonte on arrival from Paris at Bolling Field Washington. An escort of six army three navy and three marine planes will lead them in, with a formal welcome and a visit to Arlington tomb of the unknown soldier. They also attend a White House luncheon and embassy reception after touring the capital.
R H Knapp, about 63, survived over an hour after a six inch pole pierced his stomach when a wagon loaded with poles was hit head on near Burley Idaho. Knapp spoke to officers before dying at a hospital as Forrest E Wood of Tacoma Washington, the driver, and Conrad of Paul Idaho were cited in the crash mystery.
