German aviators dropped eighteen bombs on two Allied field hospitals southwest of Soissons. Two bombs hit a large red cross marking between wings causing minor damage but no injuries as patients and staff were moved to caves.
Helena, Sept 7. The Montana attorney general ruled that soldiers, sailors, Red Cross workers and others serving outside the state cannot vote in the November election unless they apply in person to county clerks for ballots. Officials fear only a few of about 45,000 affected votes will be cast due to mail delays and the War Department’s refusal to supply addresses.
Nome Alaska September 7 A Nome Nugget report notes war calls and high wages in the states pull workers away from Nome City once a bustling Alaska gold camp leaving only a few to board the last boat for the outside before the ice seals the harbor next October.
Walter Hines Page resigns due to ill health as ambassador to England and rumor places Thomas Nelson Page, ambassador to Italy, as probable successor in London.
Six thousand discarded typewriter spools sold for a cent and a half each through the American Red Cross Pacific division in San Francisco. Proceeds fund gauze and wool supplies for overseas use. The Red Cross urges all stenographers and office workers to turn in ribbons and spools as material for the front line troops.
Reports from Spokane indicate molybdenite ore found along a 10 foot ledge west of Oreville Washington. The extent of the ledge is not yet known and development work is underway.
Chicago September 7 Cern price 1 5714 oats at 7214 market quotes show oats trading amid noted figures and steady demand for prompt delivery.
Resolutions from the Southeastern Idaho Conference of County Chairmen dated August 28 1918 designate a voluntary subscription for one day with a card system and rating committee, authorizing county finance to cover expenses and urging uniform bank collateral notes and a six percent interest rate.
General March calls German retreat a general withdrawal along a hundred mile front. Paris is sixty miles away at the nearest point, versus forty on July fifteenth. The first American field army forms rapidly as 95 per cent of brigaded troops redeploy. Ninety to one hundred thousand Americans with the British. only one division now in action. Hindenburg line within ten miles of Allied advances. Franco American reach Aisne and near St Quentin. Three new divisions ordered including the 96th at Camp Cody.
Bolshevik authorities in Moscow are warned by allied powers via a Dutch Danish Swiss and Norwegian minister they will be held responsible for safety of consular officers now detained in Russia. Maximalist papers in Petrograd reportedly urge murder of French and English nationals. One hundred seven Americans reach Haparanda from Russia amid excitement and disorder but are allowed to depart.
Mr and Mrs Lyman Fargo their daughter Miriam and Mr and Mrs Earley Louise White ard and daughter were pinned when their car skidded on a Yellowstone Park grade near Cody. A peace car with jacks freed the six, no bones broken though Mrs Fargo was badly bruised. They spent the night at the Lake Hotel and will ride the park train home tonight.
Preparations are under way for the Salvation Army War Service drive in Bannock county. H. B. Thompson, chairman, will issue the word go Monday at 9 oclock. Bannock county quota is 5000 with Pocatello City taking 3000 under A. L. Merrill. Mrs. C. G. Sumner leads the ladies group with assistants to push the drive.
Paris dispatch states a treaty of alliance binds Finland to Germany placing all Finnish manpower at Germany's disposal. The Copenhagen report, carried by Le Matin, describes the pact as complete and binding.
Precinct captains will canvass citizens for winter relief funds as kettles for Salvation Army donations appear on street corners. A tag day and checks to Bannock National Bank are encouraged, with contacts listed for more information.
Allied forces led by British French and American units pushed forward along the Aisne to the Cambrai sector and in Flanders. Britons extended grip near Messines and La Bassee while French advances reached toward St Gobain and the Coucy forest as they threaten the German lines east of Rheims.
London reports aerial photographs from France showing the July 16 raid on Thionville. A big fire started among rolling stock near the freight yard and later rail cars and nearby buildings burned. The blaze spread to a huge conflagration along the river banks.
A life sized portrait of Peter the Great was uncovered among rubbish at Sitka’s old Russian bar racks building and sent to Governor Thomas Riggs Jr in Juneau. The governor plans to have it cleaned and framed, noting it likely dates from the American purchase of Alaska when Russians left Sitka, the former capital.
Malta Montana September 7 The old bone trail linking Malta with the Missouri River will be permanently marked The route earned its name from thousands of buffalo and animal bones bought from Indians then moved to the Missouri River for shipment east to be turned into fertilizer
On September 7 British forces pushed along the 20 mile front from Havrincourt to the Aisne with greater speed than expected. French troops captured Tergnie near Le Fere and advanced up to two miles, with some areas to four miles deep. The British seized Hancourt Sorella Grand and Metz en Couture near Pem bonne and penetrated Havrincourt wood. In Flanders British units moved toward Messines ridge while patrols improved positions north of the La Bassée canal.
British forces push east of Longavesnes in the Liroma region near Peronne, according to an official Japanese war office report note. other British units have moved toward the Ypres area and near Tokio.
Reported by the Associated Press dated Sept 7 the German retreat continued along the Am Rhine front with American forces driving back the enemy toward the center of the sector between Conde and Rheims.
