Ensign Brown won a Navy Bendix division with 4 hr 10 min 34.4 sec in an FJ-1 Fury for 489 mph, below Gray's 507 mph air force mark. Mantz noted slower speed due to oil pressure issues. his daughter Tenita attended the finish.
Mayor George R. Phillips of Pocatello proclaims Sept 3 through Sept 10 1948 as Union Label Week to honor products manufactured under union conditions and urges citywide observance beginning Labor Day.
The Pocatello Cardinals beat Ogden 4 to 3 as Jim Curley claimed his 10th win of the year. Ray Lowins hit a 400 foot triple and a 350 foot homer driving in two runs, Sowins drove in all four Cardinal runs with his 21st homer. Lewins made a running catch to end the ninth after Ogden staged a two hit rally.
The Central Labor union sponsors a Labor Day parade with more than 24 floats and school and city bands. Prizes include 25 dollars for best float, 25 for craft union, 10 for best float, 10 for best private car, 10 for best advertising. judging by Dalton Alvord Lindsay. A noon program at Caldwell park features James Bowns Henry C. OLeary and W C Wright with Rampton Barlow singing.
A large wildfire five miles east of Boise near Highway 30 burned about 12 000 acres of rangeland Saturday night. Firefighters 30 to 40 strong used two high pressure tankers and back fires to stop the blaze near Slater Creek and local ranches. The dispatcher called southern Idaho a tinder box amid Labor Day fire risk and noted many fires begin after dove and sage hen seasons.
Johnny Gross with wife Satur and nephew Satur claimed a sage hen limit near Pingree south of Poca tello. The party reportedly shot two sage hens by 12 03 pm and returned to Pocatello by 12 05 pm, five minutes after season opening.
The week’s top local story is a fatal highway crash near Poet tello that killed five people. Mary Carolyn Weller of Wellersville earns the weekly five dollar tip award for prompting the POST editorial office to cover the accident with tips and photos.
Samuel Allen Dunn, son of Mr and Mrs S A Dunn of Route 2 North Pocatello, enlisted in the navy for three years. He heads to San Diego for boot training, saying he would not wait for his father's Bannock county draft board to call his number.
The 1948 Bannock county fair and race meet at Pocatello fair grounds will run September 10 11 and 12 with Cy Price secretary of state guest of honor. Events include a 10 mile horse race with a $500 purse and a new 1949 car prize drawing.
Special to the Post reports three people seriously injured in a highway 30 and Declo crash near Rupert. Orville Wickel from Elliag Kelly Ransom of Declo and Joh Scott of Portland suffered fractures and shock in the collision between Wickett and Ransom vehicles.
Queen Wilhelmina, 68, resigns after 50 years on the throne to daughter Juliana. A vast Holland crowd fills the palace balcony as Juliana thanks her mother and her four daughters join to sing the national anthem amid tears and cheers.

Ed Brengan of Pocatello was chosen 1948 Democratic state chairman at Boise convention. La Vera Swope of Boise won vice chair, defeating Grace Post of Nampa. The platform called for highway department reorganization, revised delinquency laws, higher state salaries, and public assistance parity, amid debate over Wallace Taylor plank removal and electors named for November.
Salt Lake County grand jury reports residents spend more on gambling than local government. About 300 pinball and marble machines were impounded in raids led by sheriff and city police with grand jury investigators. Sixteen people were arrested as raids covered 14 spots in Salt Lake City and nearly 100 locations in the county.
In Dallas Texas Lyndon B Johnson led Coke R Stevenson by 162 votes in the Democratic U S senatorial nomination race. Figures from the Texas election bureau showed Johnson 494158 Stevenson 493000 roughly, from official and unofficial returns.
VFW post 735 members urged by Ted McCurdy to gather at 10 am Sunday in the club for Labor Day parade planning.
Five-year-old Larry Niwerth of Unity was killed at 10 45 am Saturday when struck by a rural mail carrier's car. Clifford Brown of Heyburn, driver of the mail car, was not blamed for the accident, per sheriff officials. The child went to help men move to a new farm and was returning when the incident occurred during mowing work. State Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff Pe Stewart investigated, noting sunflowers and weeds along the road. Funeral services will be announced later.
