War scare dominates Europe as France and Britain set a time limit for a German reply while Mussolini offers peace talks. Chamberlain warns of possible declaration. Daladier presses for immediate German response. Public debate spans Poland, Poland corridor, and Silesia fronts with Allied aid anticipated.
Washington officials eyed European developments with caution as hostilities between Germany and Poland appeared to slacken. No major clashes were reported, fueling hopes a wider European war might be averted while the White House and State Department held off on neutrality law action until the situation became clearer. Secretary Hull noted the foreign reports and cautioned against premature steps.
A Saturday 5:30 p m crash on the viaduct east of American Falls damaged one car and halted traffic for a time. Otto E Anderson of American Falls driving toward Pocatello was accused of reckless driving after allegedly crossing the center line and was arrested by state officer James H Bowns with arraignment set for Tuesday in American Falls.
Four men died and two were seriously injured when struck by lightning at a tobacco farming site two miles south of Mayfield Kentucky. A seventh man was struck but not seriously hurt. Coroner Brown McClain said the workers were handling tobacco in a barnless wagon when the bolt hit. One mule pulling the wagon was seriously injured.

Twin Falls Cowboys slugged three homers two by Pete Bogdanoff to beat the Lewis ton Indians 4 to 0 behind Johnny Stefan five hit pitching. Bogdanoff hit homers in the second and fourth innings and George Farrell aided on the inside the park run. Ernie Bishop made 12 puts on the field without an error as Twin Falls held a half game lead over Pocatello for first place.
The Pocatello Tribune and Idaho State Journal announceLabor Day holiday closures with no edition Monday night and no Tuesday morning issue. The Tribune will publish Tuesday evening while the Journal resumes Wednesday morning publication.

A truck driven by Joe Miller, Bancroft district, collided with a 16 foot wide binder pulled by three horses driven by C. E. Shipley Bancroft. The truck veered into an irrigation ditch and borrow pit, scattering sacks of wheat. John Starr 17 and Andrew Welsh 10 were buried but unharmed. John Miller suffered a sprained back and shock. Damage to the truck valued at 256 dollars.
Paris reports France and Britain issued a final notice to Adolf Hitler demanding immediate withdrawal of troops from Poland or face a European war. Daladier and Halifax warned negotiations remain possible only if hostilities stop. Most expect war with France and Britain aiding Poland if Hitler refuses.
Idaho planning board urged that about 2,000 attaches of the state department of public works be placed under civil service rules. The resolution, approved by two Democrats and three Republicans, echoed Gov. Bortolfsen’s 1938 push for a merit system. Acting commissioner H. R. Flint endorsed the idea, noting legislative action may be needed. The board serves in an advisory role to the department.
At 6 22 p m Saturday a collision at North Thirteenth avenue and East Wyeth involved a McMillen R F D No 1 car driven by William R McMillen and a Skouras Rupert car driven by George Skouras. Jack Geisler of Pocatello and Mrs William McMillen sustained bruises as the McMillen car struck the Skouras vehicle.
Three cars collide on North Arthur after a car driven by Richard H Seeley pulls from the curb striking J E Byington’s vehicle. The Seeley car pushes into a parked coupe owned by A P Lutz, damaging its left rear fender.

Pocatello public schools return to class at 9 a m Tuesday with about 5 574 students across 10 schools including seven grade schools Washington Lincoln Roosevelt Whittier Bonneville Emerson and Jefferson Irving and Franklin junior highs and the new million dollar high school. Principals meet with Superintendent Vaughn and director Bond to finalize plans as the ninth grade moves to the high school reducing junior school staff and creating new positions.
In a 5 game set, the Pocatello Cardinals and Ogden Reds clash at 8 15 p m today and again at 2 30 p m and 8 15 p m Monday in the season’s longest local stretch. Pocatello won 7 6 Saturday after trailing 5 1 Ogden led a four run burst in the seventh before Sandel earned the win Blydistel Lawson Navarro Berndt Bal linger and Sandel scored for Ogden and Pocatello respectively.
