Chicago Nationals return from Pittsburgh and begin practice for the opening World Series game against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow. Ideal weather foreseen for the first contest. Tribune to skip inning-by-inning coverage, giving batteries, result, place, and general information only.
Hannock county sent sixty two draft men and four transferred men to Camp Lewis American Lake Washington after a farewell lunch at the Commercial club. Mayor Bean presented the flag to Captain Heber Wilford Christensen Central. The group includes farmers railroad workers and various trades with a long roster of names and occupations.
Berlin reports that southeast of Arras British forces have repelled German infantry on both sides of the Arras Cambrai high road. A Berne dispatch cites Swiss sources alleging six weeks of disillusion in Germany with potential unrest if military prospects do not improve.
French Army reports General Mangin's forces push between the Ailette and Aisne rivers reaching Bethancourt and advancing south of Leuilpy six miles north of Soissons. The line clears the center of the plateau near Crouy on the Soissons Maubeuge road as Peronne falls to Australians with St Denis and Flamicourt now held and progress toward St Quentin noted.
John D. Ryan resigns as Anaconda Copper Company president to devote full time to government service as director of the air service. C. F P. Kelley, formerly of Butte Montana, is elected president of the company.

The French steamship Pampa 4471 tons was torpedoed and sunk on August 26 during a voyage from Bizerta to Saloniki. Four Serbian soldiers are missing among 359 aboard.

Montreal Sept 3 30 000 railroad shop employees across Canada will receive wage increases totaling 15 000 000 annually under an agreement matching the U S railroad award. The decision affects all dominion railroads and was announced today.

German forces retreat across fifty miles from Ypres to near Peronne under pressure from Foch and Haig. The breakthrough at Douai and Cambrai threatens the Hindenburg line while Lens falls to British forces and Lys salient tightens.
President Wilson announced September 12 as the draft registration day for all men 18 to 45 not already registered or in military service. Registration runs from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. with enrollment possible by mail for absentees and tardy enrollment for illness. The effort aims to place up to 15 million men under potential call for war service.
