U S navy reports relentless American advances on Attu drive most Japanese troops into a three to four square mile mountainous pocket near Chi chagof harbor. Marines climbed Fishhook ridge amid snow and heavy fire, beginning the end of Japan's foothold as operations near completion.
Allied air forces struck Leghorn 160 miles north of Rome with nearly 100 Flying Fortresses and Liberators, destroying docks, shipyards and an oil refinery. President C. J. Strike reports Idaho Power is rushing two lines for the war effort. A 106 mile 66 000 volt link from Emmett to Stibnite is being accelerated, while a 26 mile 132 000 volt line from American Falls to Pocatello is in the process of completion.
OPA Director C. C. Anderson says west coast hucksters are raiding Idaho poultry supplies via a broad black market. Harold Howell, ex executive secretary of the Idaho Independent Voters league seeking Bottolfsen recall and 68 legislators, says the governor and state GOP chairman fear addressing the recall. Bottolfsen had set a May 21 radio address on the recall but canceled it an hour before. Atkinson issued a critical statement and tried to suppress it in Boise while it appeared in other papers. The dispute centers on transparency about the recall effort.
The Mandoka County News reports Amalgamated Sugar of Ogden plans a potato dehydrat ing plant at the Rupert Paul sugar factory. John W. Meadows 83 year old former inmate of two state prisons was sentenced by District Judge Charles F. Koelsch to 10 to 20 years in the state penitentiary after a jury found him guilty of assault with a deadly weapon in the April 8 shooting of Jack H. Wilson. Wilson lost three fingers. Meadows had earlier served 26 years for the 1914 killing of Bannock county Deputy Sheriff L. A. Taylor during an attempted jail break at Pocatello.
London papers speculate on a European invasion with warnings that the greatest naval operation in history is imminent. Rome radio says Italy is a prime invasion target and a Russian Caucasus offensive may align with Anglo American moves. The report notes large war material flow toward the Mediterranean and says invasion could use thousands of barges carrying marines.
Reports say Guy Allancourt of 835 North Eleventh has been missing since May 25 after leaving Pocatello on a motorcycle to visit his mother in Mackay. More than 100 four engined bombers struck St Nazaire La Pallice and Rennes in Brittany late Saturday. Liberators and Flying Fortresses dropped 2,000 pound bombs, scoring bullseye hits on targets including U-boat bases at St Nazaire and La Pallice and military targets at Rennes. Thirteen bombers were lost in the raids as RAF forces supported the operation and continued raids on northern French airfields.

He favors constitutional limits of two four year terms for future presidents and backs a proposal by Senator Bailey of North Carolina to send the measure to the judiciary committee for hearings.
John P. Spaenhower of Stockton Calif was elected chairman by the 11 states conference of the American Trucking Association, succeeding C R Craven of Pocatello. Spaenhower stressed the trucking industry’s vital wartime role noting every commodity on the market passed through highway transportation at some stage of production or delivery.
