Yankees Sink 2 Jap Ships In West Pacific

The navy reports U.S. submarines in the western Pacific have sunk two Japanese ships and likely sunk a third while damaging a heavy cruiser. The Far East communique No. 82 lists an auxiliary ship sunk and two cargo ships sunk or severely damaged, with no prior Navy announcement.

Dive Bomber From Brazil Sinks U-Boat

A Brazilian air force dive bomber is credited with sinking an axis submarine off Brazil’s northeast coast five days ago following US fliers’ assistance. Recife reports say Brazilian planes located two submarines, sinking one and damaging the other. The Barrdale torpedoed near Martinique May 17 sank in four minutes. 52 survivors reached Rio Iguazu.

Lewis Ousts Phil Murray From UMW Vice Presidency

John L. Lewis ousted Philip Murray from his $18,000 a year post as vice president of the United Mine Workers. The action, supported 17 to 1 by the UMW executive board, leaves Murray’s office vacant and appoints John O Leary of Pittsburgh in his stead. Murray may appeal to the UMW convention in Atlantic City next October.
