Paris May 26 AP Captain Charles A Lindbergh, undeterred by money offers, donates 150000 francs for French aviators families. He declines American offers, shares grief for fallen French pilots Nun and Coli, and tours Paris with formal receptions and gifts piling up from residents and officials.
Dr. Fred E. Wright of the Carnegie Institution explains that lunar gravity, about one sixth of Earth's, affects projectile ranges and crater formation. He cites long moonshot ranges for a 75 millimeter gun and a Big Bertha, plus how reduced gravity and lack of atmosphere could create cleanly chipped crater appearances and ejecta from impacts.
Boise date May 26 Governor H C Dridge and Agriculture Commissioner John S Welch returned to their offices after attending the annual Show and White day event in Dow y. The Holstein Friesian cattle exhibit was held Tuesday.
Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Red Sox 3 to 1 in the first game of a doubleheader in Philadelphia, with Lefty Grove facing Wiltse in a pitcher’s duel. Second game ended 4 to 3 as Myers’ homer plated Haney in the ninth to win for Boston. Browns beat Indians 2 to 1 in Cleveland, O’Rourke driving in the tenth.
Dr. Francis E. Clark, founder and longtime head of the World Christian Endeavor Society, died at 75 after three weeks of illness. He organized the society in Portland, Me., in 1881 with 40 youths and built it into a global, interdenominational movement with millions of adherents.
Thomas Taylor aged 36 an employee of Strange McGuire Paving died from injuries sustained at the gravel crusher on the Old Oregon Trail four miles west of town. He became entangled in the crusher clutch and was buried as the shaft turned. his coat tore away and he was found by co workers. The body will be transported to Robin for a Saturday funeral at 2 p.m. from the L D S meeting house. He suffered a fractured left shoulder and severe crush injuries to the left side of his back and left thigh.
In a May 26 announcement Secretary Mellon approved a reduced size for paper currency, cutting length by about 1.3 inches and width by 0.75 inch. The change aims to save roughly 2.606 million dollars annually, with redesigned notes retaining major features and relocation of portraits to denote denominations. Washington will appear on one dollar notes and Jefferson on two dollar certificates. other larger denominations awaiting design choice.
A 70 mile an hour gale struck the Virginia league baseball park in Portsmouth as a game continued. Richard Preston McWilliams 42 was killed when the press box and roof collapsed into the grandstand. Three warehouse workers also died when their building was struck. Several officials escaped injury.
The 139th annual Presbyterian general assembly opened in the Civic Auditorium San Francisco May 26 with over 1,000 delegates from the United States and Canada. Sessions run through June 1 as Dr William Oxley Thompson delivers the official sermon on The Gospel of Reconciliation from Corinthians.
New York report notes Southern Pacific net operating income rose to 3.23 million with gross revenue at 23.59 million, up from last year. Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul posted a 141 thousand dollar operating deficit while total gross fell to 11.94 million from 12.23 million.
Ford Motor Company will place in the light car field a new machine to replace its present model T automobile. Henry Ford signed the statement announcing the plan and said a complete description and price would be made public in a few weeks. Production start date was not disclosed.
Lieutenant James A. Doolittle of McCook Field flew an outside loop at 8000 feet over Dayton achieving a 2000 foot diameter circle. He completed the maneuver with the plane returning to level flight despite intense strain and blood-shot eyes.
New York officials disclose subpoenas against 11 theatre ticket agencies and 20 individuals in a federal inquiry into tax dodges on ticket marks. The complaint alleges violations of the 1918 internal revenue act with penalties up to one year in prison or a $10000 fine, and points to overcharges from major clubs as a key sales source.
Seven men were injured with three possibly fatally and six others unaccounted for after a gas well blast near Sanford fourteen miles northwest of Borger Texas. Seven injured were brought to Borger. J B Dodson, within 600 feet, described a fire after the explosion as casing was being set. Origin undetermined.
London May 26 Sir Austen Chamberlain told the house of commons the government would not support a labor motion for inquiry into charges of Soviet propaganda. He said the motion was a censure and that if confidence was not expressed the government would take duties accordingly. He denied plans for an anti Soviet alliance and cited Soviet attempts to exploit global unrest, including Chinese tensions, to undermine British interests. The trade agreement conditions were claimed to be violated by the Soviet side and Soviet diplomacy seen as political propaganda.
The British government released a white paper today containing documents from the raid on Soviet House in London and Arcos Ltd to illustrate the Soviet government and the Third Internationale against Great Britain. The most interesting part is a list.
William Montgomery Brown, deposed as Protestant Episcopal bishop of Arkansas for heresy, calls for government trial on seditious communism to prove America is communistic. He criticizes U S actions in Nicaragua and China and Sacco and Vanzetti case. He says church trials revealed clerical rebellion against government.
Tom Brooks, an escaped inmate from Idaho State Penitentiary, was captured by Pendleton police after two months on the run. He said he fled because prison meals bored him and he had four months left to serve on a four-year term.
Tens of thousands of Parisians filled the Champs Elysees and Place de la Concorde to cheer Captain Charles A. Lindbergh as he arrived from the American embassy for a municipal reception at the Hotel de Ville. Guards and police kept order while flowers and a festive atmosphere framed the procession through a sunlit Paris in May.
Jacob Rosenthal of Times Publishing Co launches a movement for a flight from America to the Philippines pledging 1000 pesos toward a purse. In Louisiana and Texas reports, floodwaters threaten Pointe Coupee Parish and a gas well explosion in Sanford, Texas kills two and injures seven with four missing.
Stephen B. Davis resigns as acting secretary of commerce effective June 1. President Coolidge accepts the resignation as the nation awaits the return of Secretary Hoover.
New York May 26 The American Smelting and Refining Company today reduced the price of lead from 6.50 to 6.40 cents per pound.
