The American vessel Nebraskan en route from Liv Egol to Delaware breakwater was torpedoed by a submarine west of Fastnet. The crew abandoned to lifeboats but returned, regained control, and continued underway. No lives were lost. The forehold flooded and the ship listed bow down.
London May 26 The American steamer Nebraskan passed Queens town under its own steam on the way to Liverpool.
Bryan says state department information is too meagre to form an opinion on the Nebraskan torpedoing. A full report with details is expected soon. Consul General Skinner in London cites the British admiralty report of the Nebraskan torpedoing but notes no direct American report has been received.
The Nebraskan, under charter to White Star Line and carrying coal from Newport News to San Francisco, faced questions of international law after reports of its sinking. The U S government and owners argued about liability, prize status, and damages, while American crew were said to have evacuated before destruction.
From San Francisco on May 26 the congressional party returnees from Hawaii express indignation upon learning the Nebraskan torpedoing. Senator Othe Jones says any foreign nation destroying an American vessel knowingly amounts to a declaration of war. Senator Overman notes new complications to the German situation.
The Jewish Chron ile reports in Alexandria the formation of a Zion Mule Transport Corps, a Jewish legion mainly of Pale refugees. Berlin May 26 The German Atlantic Cable company despite wartime cable cuts has declared a dividend of 6 1 4 per cent, only one per cent less than the previous year.
Jacob Ruppert, founder of the Jacob Ruppert Brewing Company and a widely known brewer, died at his New York home today at age 44.
Thermopolis Wyoming May 26 A cloud burst washed a flood through the town with a five foot wall of water damaging about fifty thousand dollars. The torrent swept into streets and basements and left many dwellings and storefronts flooded.
Ernest J. Sias addressed a large business audience at the Commercial club luncheon. He urged pride in the hometown and spending money locally, calling Chautauqua America's new national sport and predicting Pocatello would attract thousands during Chautauqua week. He quoted a verse advocating boosting for better streets lights and lectures and urged residents to boost or face criticism.
London May 26 The Athens correspondent for the Exchange Telegraph company reports King Constantine remains in a critical condition.
The Greek legation reports that King Constantine's overall condition remains unchanged. No new developments or changes in his health are noted.
A May 26 tornado at Spalding Nebraska destroyed a farmer's home. Mrs. Tom Kelly was killed and her husband fatally injured as the storm swept a twelve mile by half mile area. The incident marks a deadly weather event damaging rural properties and causing fatalities.
Al Davis of Alexander set a creek net to trap trout, pulling in two and three pounders. Deputy Game Warden Lehrbas, a skilled trap shooter, arrested Davis and sent him before Judge J. H. Bagler. Davis faced $25 in costs plus the original net expense for his unlawful endeavor.
The Dutch liner Ryndam en route from New York to Rotterdam collided southeast of Nanucket Shoal lightship with the tramp freighter Joseph J. Cuneo. Ryndam and Cuneo sustained damage. 77 passengers and 160 crew were moved to the Cuneo and later to the battleship South Carolina. Water flooded the Ryndam’s hold.
Paris officials move to establish an annual Fair of Paris to replace the Leipzig fair for French merchants. The council asks the executive to organize it immediately after hostilities end, with the Grand Palais site likely, a plan long debated by Paris traders.
Boston dispatch reports the steamship Cretic arrives from Naples and the Azores with up to 1000 Americans aboard. They fled villas at Naples amid serious war rumors and sought refuge aboard the vessel.
The Chinese minister and Mme Shah host informal entertainment for an official delegation of Chinese merchants and bankers visiting the United States. The group will be welcomed in Washington and entertained today and tomorrow in the capital city.

County commissioners Short Line and state highway officials met to pause one McCammon subway project for now as funds go to the highway proper. The Short Line may, at its expense, build the upper subway between McCammon and the line to be decided soon. Other rights of way matters were also addressed.
In Los Angeles on May 26 the North ern Baptist convention endorsed the president's neutral rights stance in the European war and urged national prohibition and federal divorce laws with strict Sunday closing enforcement. It also backed international arbitration for world peace. Dr Cortland Myers of Boston predicted saloons would vanish in four years and that the war would topple monarchs and emperors.
A London report states British torpedoes cost 3500 to 5000 dollars to construct. German subs use 21 inch torpedoes with 48 knot speed, seven mile range, and 250 pounds of explosive, featuring a high speed rotating engine and gears.
Yuan Shih kai issues a mandate to revive worship of Confucius and temple rites. It honors historic generals Yo Fei and Kuan Yu, with ceremonies led by the minister of war in March and widespread reconstruction of temples nationwide.

Albany May 26. The appellate court set the week of July 12 for the execution of former Police Lieutenant Charles L. Becker, convicted in the Herman Rosenthal murder. The death warrant was sent to Sing Sing prison warden Osborne as Governor Whiteman stayed silent.
Grand Army of the Republic and United Spanish War Veterans coordinate a Sunday Memorial Day program with a parade from North Arthur Ave to the Auditorium, union church services, cemetery exercises, and a Ferguson address. About 35 Spanish War veterans and 12 or more Grand Army members expected. Krag rifles loan requested. schools urged to provide flowers. A holiday observance will close many local stores on Monday.
New York on May 26 Mrs Charlotte O Neill wife of Francis O Neill an architectural engineer was found dead in her Brooklyn home with a bullet in her heart. In the adjoining room two of three children Josephine one and Francis four lay with cords around their necks. The boy revived but the baby died. Detectives believe the woman became demented and killed the children before shooting herself.
A Berlin telegram reported by the Courant states that Germany and Italy agreed neither to intern civilians nor seize their property.
The Duke of Avarna Italian ambassador to Vienna Baron Von Macchio and Prince Von Buelow with the Bavarian legation staff arrived in Zurich. Italian diplomats boarded a train to Rome while Von Macchio went to Vienna. Guards at the station assisted the transfer.
Paris reports furious fighting in An region north of Lorette heights with German forces repulsed as French troops retain gains near Burval. Artillery engagements occur at Soissons and Rheims while French aviators bombarded targets destroying hangars and destroying gasoline tanks at Grang Priel and Hervilly.
Army headquarters reported a French night raid west of Bellewaard forest repulsed with ten English machine guns captured. Northeast of Givenchy colored British troops gained a trench projection while a southern French assault between Lievin and Lorette failed and cost about a hundred prisoners. Heavy German losses reported.
Paris dispatch reports the Italian government has declared a blockade of air ports along the Austrian-Hungarian coasts on May 26. Italy cites strategic defense as the reason for the move amid rising tensions in the region.
Venetian authorities ban any lights visible from above the city from sunset to sunrise to prevent aerial observation. The May 26 measure applies to all buildings and public facilities to maintain blackout conditions.
