Senate Democrats vote to instruct the Privilege and Election Committee to reopen the famous case as La Follette resolution is defeated. Unrest remains among ranks as party divisions surface amid Illinois senatorship questions.
Washington May 25 Senate Democrats voting by more than two thirds support the Martin resolution directing the committee on privileges and elections to reinvestigate the Lorimer case. Several senators reserve the right to amend and some say they will not be bound by caucus action.
In Washington on May 25 a Democratic caucus led by Senator Martin split over who should lead the Lorimer inquiry. Some backed the LaFollette plan creating a five member special committee, while a majority favored the Martin resolution extending the probe to include the Springfield jackpot fund. Regular Republicans planned to back Martin as a substitute for both La Follette and Dillingham proposals.
Washington May 25 Senator La Follette for the fourth day kept the senate floor in a prolonged speech opposing William Lorimer retaining his seat. The house did not meet though many of its special investigating committees were active.
Washington May 25 Allen and Graham New York attorneys who have acted for the National Grange opposing the Canadian reciprocity agreement will be summoned by the senate finance committee to appear before it next Monday. Senator Stone moved to uncover who was behind the fight on reciprocity.
In Boston on May 25 the annual Unitarian association meeting failed to remove United States Senator Fletcher of Florida from the vice presidents list over his Lorimer case stance. Opposition led by Rev. John Haynes Holmes of New York City numbered about one third of attendees.
Clarence S Darrow, Chicago attorney hired to defend the McNamara brothers in the dynamiting case, arrived in Los Angeles and conferred with the defense committee of union labor leaders. He spent hours with the McNamaras in their cell as the grand jury investigation continued into an alleged attempt to destroy the county Hall of Records last October.
A copy of Foxe's Book of Martyrs, owned by the Bedford Literary Institute, was auctioned at Sothebys in London. The volume is highly valued as it is believed to have belonged to John Bunyan during his imprisonment.
Madrid May 25 reports say all the pilots who started the Paris to Madrid race from St Sebastian faced misfortune and difficulties at the capital's air route conditions. Most were hoped to resume flight to this city later today.

Montreal May 25 The first execution of an Italian in this province is to take place in Montreal tomorrow. Francesco Gravelo is to die for the murder of fellow countryman Giuseppe Chine. The Italian colony pressed for commutation but failed amid a wave of Italian crime in recent years.
John R. Walsh in Leavenworth received a telegram from his Chicago son announcing President Taft's refusal to grant a pardon. Warden Major McClaughrey said Walsh showed no visible emotion as he read and pocketed the telegram.
The sixth annual West Jersey Horse Show Association exhibition opens in Collingswood New Jersey and runs through the week. Seven classes plus eight classes are listed with strong entry across all divisions and several events limited to local riders.

Denver, May 25. S. L. Tony Von Puhl of St. Louis died after being shot three times by F. Harold Henwood at the Brown Palace hotel following a quarrel. Henwood, now in jail, faces a murder charge.
In Denver last night a dispute, likely over a Denver society woman, escalated into a triple shooting at the Brown Palace hotel. Frank H. H. Henwood, Globe Blow Gas Co. agent, fired injuring H L Von Puhl of St. Louis, J W Atkinson of Colorado Springs, and G B Copeland of Victor. Von Puhl faces possible fatal injuries. Henwood jailed awaiting victim condition. Von Puhl had been seeking a balloon flight over the Rockies.
Missoula Montana May 25 The second annual Montana Good Roads congress convention will be held June 27 and 28 in Missoula drawing 545 delegates from cities and counties to plan road building. Notable speakers include Governors Norris Burke of North Dakota John Shafroth of Colorado and M F E Hay of Washington with others from the Kansas Good Roads association the University of North Dakota and Seattle. A push to create a state roadway commissioner and to include road science in education will be pursued. Mayors and county commissioners may appoint delegates and Governor Norris will choose five delegates per county.

New York May 25 reports from the financial district say a price cut in steel bars is imminent. The current Pittsburg price stands at 1 dollar 40 cents per hundred pounds and workers are demanding a five or ten cent reduction.

Home built machines from the northwest will be invited to fly for substantial cash prizes while a committee of experts may bar flights deemed too dangerous.
