Masons plan a 225000 dollar Masonic temple in Arthur adjoining Raymond Park. Construction expected July 1 with completion by March 1, 1948. The building will be brick steel and concrete with terra cotta trim and a 46 by 66 banquet hall on the first floor.
Senator Henry Dworshak of Idaho urged President Truman to end home sugar rationing immediately while keeping price controls. He cited large eastern storage, a likely record Cuban crop, and projected 1947 sugar consumption of about 7.6 million tons. He suggested delaying lifting controls on industrial users until clearer industry data is available.
An American army plane evacuated the families of the American consul-general and the British consul-general, plus UNRRA staff, from Changchun as Communist forces closed in. The embassy cited disrupted transport and unsettled conditions, with flight departures coordinated to Peiping.
Idaho public utilities commission prepares for a rehearing Tuesday in the state senate chamber on Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. rate increase. Postmaster Roscoe B Huston bans second dog bites on any Detroit home mail deliveries The rule cited by Edward B Landry national safety director of the post office department notes ten weekly dog bites in summer doubling in winter and a single bite costing 266 in hospital bills The policy grounds itself in old English common law allowing only one bite per dog.
The City Council met under the local option law and ruled the petition lacked required signatures by qualified electors. They adopted a resolution stating no referendum local option election would be held.
Betty Jane Rose, mother of Rooney's two sons, sues in Los Angeles alleging fraud in a 1943 settlement. Brigadier General Eric Neumann chief adjutant to Himmler and former commander of security police in Holland and Belgium was captured in Bavaria after a two year search by American war crimes investigators. He posed as a farmer near Berchtesgaden and is in custody at Regensburg.
The 11 nation Balkans commission signed a report for the United Nations Security Council urging that armed bands breaching Balkan frontiers be treated as a menace to world peace. Nine nations supported. Russia and Poland opposed. The panel blamed Yugoslavia for guerrilla aid in northern Greece and criticized Albania and Bulgaria to a lesser degree. It also noted Greece’s internal conditions as contributory and urged study of voluntary minority transfers.
Tucson official Belle D Hall issued a marriage license to R. Jeffries Jr. and Jeffries after County Attorney Oolin Dodd ruled there is nothing in the statutes preventing a man from marrying his stepmother. Jeffries said he will be the happiest man in California.
Idaho Public Utilities Commission denied a petition by several warehouses to raise charges for grain handling storage cleaning bulking and sacking. Hearings took place in Pocatello on April 8 and Lewiston on April 15 with witnesses from Farmers Grain Cooperative Pacific Coast Elevator Co Globe Mills Midland Elevator and others. No warehouse reps attended the Lewiston hearing.

The House Appropriations Committee recommends an $805,143,576 Agriculture Department bill for the coming year, slashing 32 percent from Truman's request. The move would fund selective reductions across farm programs and departments, including the home administration, soil conservation, crop insurance, and school lunches, while asserting farm conditions justify smaller federal outlays.
Senator Bridges and fellow Republicans press for a $1,000,000,000 reduction in old appropriations approved by the Democratic Congress. They aim to save about $4.5 billion below Truman's estimates by trimming army, navy, agriculture and other ongoing appropriations. Bridges notes a $641,832,000 transfer will aid the plan but does not name agencies affected.
The Poca naval ordnance plant opens to the public Sunday May 25 from 12 to 4 pm in observance of Naval Reserve day. Visitors may view moving picture shorts in the Marine Barracks Recreation Hall with two films The Silent Service and The Fleet that Came to Stay depicting wartime submarine action and fleet operations.
The Jefferson school earned nine certificates of merit from the Latham Foundation for Humane Education. A first prize of $2 was awarded to Terry Ranstrom in second grade. Other merit recipients include Timothy Hellebrant and Gary Bates in first grade, Dee Jay Huff and Karen Proctor in second and third grades, Bob Brookhart and Virginia Eckersley in fourth grade, and Marjorie Rowland and John Tolman in sixth grade.
Tokyo reports 60 year old Socialist Tetsu Katayama elected Japan's new premier by 420 votes in the house of representatives. He becomes the first Socialist premier chosen by popular vote and will seek a coalition cabinet amid Liberal party opposition led by Shigeru Yoshida.
Sen. Taylor of Idaho blasted the House for trimming reclamation bureau funding from 145.95 million to 67 million. He warned the “bookkeeping economy” will raise overall costs and hinder multi year bids on projects like the Palisades. He denounced Indian service cuts as indefensible.

British sources report the cabinet approved a plan to partition India into Hindu and Muslim states as a fallback if Indian leaders reject a central unified government. Mountbatten will press leaders to accept a constitutional formula uniting India with provincial autonomy. a divided India would be a procedural option for Indians to implement.

Wendell residents will vote on a local option measure to permit liquor sales by the drink on June 17. The same day, elections will be held in Buhl Rupert Gooding and Shoshone as announced by the city council.
