In Phoenix on May 21 Governor Hunt threads through a legislative message. He denounces profiteering patriots behind unrest and argues I W W was not the strikes’ factor. He says disputes stem from battles between legitimate labor and copper company dominated business and urges pro worker legislation.
Washington May 21 C 4 W Huntington of New York has been removed by Director General McAdoo as president of the Virginian railway for disobedience of railroad administration orders on maintenance and improvement. J H Young of Norfolk was appointed to succeed him.
May 21 George Babe Ruth premier pitcher of the Boston Red Sox and AL batting leader collapsed on a street car while going to Fenway Park for the Cleveland Boston game. He had just left a doctor's office and suffered throat trouble, taken to Stillman Eye and Ear hospital for possible weeklong rest.
Several cases fill the criminal calendar this week in district court. A jury is empaneled for State vs William Bybee on tortion with trial set Wednesday. Thursday brings State vs Joe Apa and Joe Bossi on gambling charges. Friday features State vs Pete Cayias on gambling, and Saturday State vs Chas Chapman on seduction.
Bannock's Red Cross campaign gains momentum as Cassia Payette and Camas exceed their quotas totaling 8500 under Bannock. Subscriptions at war fund HQ reached 2700 today with more planned. Short Line and women’s committees plan new activities to push the drive over the top. Grace district already surpassed its 640 quota yesterday.
Idaho bankers gather in Pocatello June 3 and 4 for the state association convention. War era banking issues, credentials, speeches on state banks joining the Federal Reserve and farming relations will guide the program with tours and social events planned for attendees.
The Italian colony of Pocatello will stage a patriotic parade Friday May 24 marking the WWI anniversary. The Mutal aid society of Christopher Columbus issues a general invitation to city organizations with Red Cross likely to float. The parade will leave Mike Gates Place North Fourth at 2 PM led by the Pocatillo band.
Washington May 21 The danger from submarines has diminished prompting the war risk bureau to recommend lowering the insurance rate on the lives of officers and crews of merchant vessels in the war zone from 2 1 2 to 1 1 2 dollars per thousand.
Washington reports estimate three quarters of a million men will be registered for the army by June 5, from youths who turned twenty one since last June. A million youths may register and about a quarter likely exempted on various grounds. The piece also notes a U S inquiry into Irish Sinn Fein ties with German agents and looming British arrests.
R. O. Jones, former secretary to the late Senator Brady and recent attorney for the alien property custodian, leaves Friday for Coeur d Alene to practice law under Judge James F. Airshie. A University of Idaho graduate and 1914 Republican congressional candidate, Jones may manage Airshie s senate campaign.
The Dutch government has prohibited the sailing of all Dutch steamships from Dutch ports. Sailing vessels and coastwise craft are excepted from the ruling.
Northwest of Melville on the Flanders salient the British improved positions last night. Thirty prisoners and six machine guns were taken in the operation. A counter attack launched this morning after heavy shelling was crushed by British artillery.
Washington May 21 The House tentatively agreed to an amendment in the administration food production bill. It would render an $11 million appropriation unavailable unless a presidential proclamation prohibits using food for manufacturing intoxicants.
Columbus Ohio May 21 The general assembly of the Presbyterian Church North adopts resolutions urging an organic union of all Evangelical churches in the United States, calling it the most important action by any denomination in years.
Washington reports the German food situation at its most critical in months. Even with the June 15 ration cut, officials fear the population will lack food through the next harvest. Other dispatches note Saxony consuming camel and dog meat as fodder shortages bite, while Vienna and front regions show widespread hunger and soldiers begging for sustenance.
