Mexico City May 21 Elu erta said he authorized the Mexican peace commissioners at the Niagara Falls mediation to offer his resignation if necessary to achieve a solution of the Mexican situation.
Washington May 21 Bryan said the preliminary mediation conference over the Mexican difficulties is proceeding smoothly with no hitch after a private wire from the president. Unofficial sources say Huerta has placed himself in the hands of his three commissioners and may report to erase Huerta as part of a final settlement. No friction occurred over credentials for American commissioners.
In Niagara Falls on May 21 the South American mediators conferred with Mexican delegates to gauge Huerta’s general stance on tentative settlement plans. No concrete proposals were discussed and a press dispatch claiming Huerta authorized resignations was later corrected to say denial.
Telegram from General Angeles reports Saltillo emptied by federals last night. Saltillo garrison numbered about twelve thousand under General Maas. Town holds large stores of food and ammunition. The only retreat is south to San Luis Potosi, crossing a desert two hundred miles long. A strong rebel force threatens San Luis Potosi.
Independence Kansas May 21 Cato Sells commissioner of Indian affairs and Lieutenant Richardson of the navy began hearings on the feasibility of the government building and operating an oil pipeline about 600 miles long from the mid continent oil fields of Oklahoma to the Gulf of Mexico to supply the navy with fuel oil.
A 5000 strong constitutionalist army advances from Tepic toward Guadalajara after inflicting heavy losses on the federal forces. A cavalry unit works to disrupt Huerta’s communications and sever the Manzanillo to Guadalajara railroad.
Judge Ben Lindsey of Denver warned President Wilson that Colorado faces civil strife requiring government intervention. The president stated that troops would not be withdrawn at present.
Lynn Massachusetts May 21 17 year old Hen Garvin died after being shot in the head when Miss Juanita Griffith attempted to strike him with a rifle bullet at a theatre Tuesday. The woman is being held by the police.
Jacob Danuser of the Short Line suffered the complete loss of his right eye while chopping kindling at 715 North Harrison. A flying splinter severed the eyeball and an artery. he was treated by a surgeon, then transported to Salt Lake City for further care. His wife was greatly distressed by the incident.
New York May 21 The prosecution and defense in the Charles Becker murder trial proceed as addresses to the jury begin at 2 this afternoon. The case will be in the jury's hands Friday.
New York May 21 Justice Seabury rejected admitting the dying confession alleged by Dago Frank Choffer about Becker in the Herman Rosenthal murder. The ruling blocks the confession unless sworn in affidavit form and signed by an authorized deposition taker. Becker's counsel vows no further appeal but hints at a future trial challenge.
