AP dispatches report the Red Army narrowing in on Kharkov as German counterattacks with tanks and trailer troops plunge into Russian lines. Pravda notes parachute landings of up to 120 troops at a time failed to halt the seven day offensive.
British sources say Marshal Timoshenko’s armies push on a 100 mile front from Volchansk to Krasnograd, with German resistance slowed but not stopped. Dispatches debate German morale, citing Nazi police grip, Hess flight, Russia invasion, and food decline as morale sinks while front lines see heavy tank and artillery activity.
Delegates from the Eleven Western States Conference of the American Trucking Associations opposed proposed 200 mile haul limits. J C Cotant of Pocatello Idaho was named committee chair to assemble data and refute the idea. Sam A Simpson of Los Angeles urged speed reduction as a rubber saver. Sheriff McNichols reports a Ste Genevieve MO letter naming Willard Wright 22 sought for the fatal shooting of Weldon Morgan 34 at the Idaho cement plant in Inkom. Wright, a parolee from Nebraska, is also wanted in St Louis MO on a car theft charge. No solid clues on Wright’s whereabouts exist amid ongoing inquest and investigations.
Navy reports 16 Allied vessels sunk by submarines in May 11 17 period, bringing total Allied sinkings to 191 in the western Atlantic. Casualties list shows 83 dead 115 missing and 470 survivors. Additional ships attacked not sunk include two towed and one afire adrift.
The Federal Reserve Board estimates American consumers are reducing installment debts by about a quarter billion dollars monthly. regulations on down payments and payoff times curb credit and shrink available goods like cars. As a result, payments on existing debts rise faster than new obligations.
Idaho Falls gas station operators meeting Monday night to discuss closing on Sundays to forestall fuel rationing. Local operator L. Squires notes the plan aims at voluntary Sunday closings following Pocatello sabbath closures.

The body believed to be Larry Weir, 45, former sheriff of Silver Bow County Montana, was found in Beaver Creek eight miles north of Dubois by Paul Stolt, pending positive identification. Weir had been missing from Butte for three weeks and a removal of the body was expected to be difficult as authorities investigate.
Reports from Aneta say Heinrich Himler has landed in Holland to quell rising resistance and to oversee possible puppet government led by Anton Mussert. London claims 50 000 German troops entered Norway since March as Vichy ships and troops move to Dakar and French West Africa.
Senator La Follette said the Senate will consider a resolution this week to designate June 13 as Douglas MacArthur Day in observance of the general’s appointment to West Point. The move honors the 7th anniversary of his West Point appointment and asks national recognition.
The local American Legion post in Montpelier launches a scrap iron and rubber drive with committee members E B Wuthrich Jesse Orchard Parley Buehler H G Nuckols and Jer ome Taylor. A Fourth of July celebration planning committee includes H G Nuckols Vern Dunn and A J Winters. Commander Nuckols and Vice Commander Grimes were named delegates to the district convention in Malad on May 20.
Fourteen year old Frank Chess of Picabo died after accidentally swallowing gasoline. He died at Hailey Clinical hospital where he was treated a week earlier. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Ben Chess. Funeral services were held yesterday at Hailey Community church.

The RAF attacked the German cruiser Prinz Eugen off southern Norway, with two definite torpedo hits and one probable. The Senate appropriations committee urged a 199.74 million dollar airport program developing 164 new fields and upgrading 266 existing ones. About 1400 pounds of sugar were found in the city dump and declared unfit for consumption. Police stated the sugar had been soaked with water and hardened like rock making it unusable.
