London scholars urge strong U S support while predicting possible strain with Japan over California and Arizona land acts. The American Federation declares opposition to the appointment of Publisher Page as ambassador to the Court of St James. The stance labels the move an outlaw union action and frames the appointment as unacceptable to organized labor.
A protest resolution against nominating Walter S Page as US ambassador to Great Britain was introduced in the London trades council. The push cites a letter on Allied Trades Council New York letterhead signed by Charles L Conway secretary National Brotherhood of Bookbinders. Conway accuses Doubleday Page Company of wrongdoing.
The National Brotherhood of Bookbinders is outlawed and expelled from the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders two years ago. It has been repudiated by the American Federation of Labor. The secretary will inform the London Trades Council.
Washington May 17 Neither senate nor house is in session this morn ing and tariff bill consideration moved from the senate floor to the finance committee for at least two weeks. Chairman Simmons said sub committees handling schedules would not report for days. One committee targets war on the wool department amid amendments to active features of the bill.
Washington May 17 reports indicate the unsatisfactory state of US Mexico relations may prompt the administration to push Huerta government toward action. Recognition by foreign states, including great powers, is influencing policy and a new ambassador to succeed Henry Lane Wilson is expected to be appointed soon.

The Idaho state land department schedules a public auction May 31 in Homedale for over 10 000 acres in Owyhee county within the Gem Irrigation district. Water is on the land enabling irrigated crops this season. bids start at $12.50 to $30 per acre, with down payments required: 10 percent for land under $25 and 20 percent for land over $25.
New York on May 17 reports the sale of twelve letters by Mrs Lincoln, widow of Abraham Lincoln. The letters, from after the assassination, show her harshly reproaching Congress and General Grant, including a December 30, 1865, note contrasting Grant's services with her husband’s.
London May 17 militant suffragists carried a new phase of arson harming a tenanted Cambridge house. The interior and adjacent university property were damaged. A gunpowder canister and slugs were found at Boxmoor railway station.
Philadelphia May 17 The University of Pennsylvania defeated Cornell University 68 to in a rain soaked game.
Cincinnati reports say a morning mob attacked two Traction Company cars at Brighton barns injuring strikebreakers. Cement and iron debris were dropped from a building as workers caused multiple car wrecks and halted operation. Governor Cox and Adjutant General Wood were urged to send troops.
Bannock County commissioners approve a $40500 road budget for 1913 with $13500 per district to fund new roads and bridges. They note existing projects will count against the appropriation while local groups pledge cash and labor for Trail Creek road and other improvements reaching toward Power county line. The Commercial Club dinner discussed road work and pledges totaling $1000 for Trail Creek, with farmers at the line contributing $1000 in money and labor. The Arbon project is cited as a future route expansion benefiting Pocatello communities.
Arthur W. Anderson of Seattle returned sixty dollars to the Minneapolis post office after admitting he cashed a money order sent by mistake. He said the act came from conscience and he hopes to sleep now.
West End Athletic Baseball club heads to Junction Town on No. 4 Sunday to face the McCammon team. The lineup features Clark catcher Scotty pitcher Hulihan short O Melveny first Igo second McCane third Collins left Irwin center Aland right Ogden Isham mascot. Scott from Iowa will pitch with Clark behind the bat. The Pocatello Indians meet McCammon Independents at 2 30 in a fast game likely to draw interest.
In Potsdam on May 17 Prince Henry of Reuss wed Princess Victoria Margarete of Prussia. The Empress set the historic princess crown on her head, a royal treasure loaned for marriages of Prussian princesses.
Cuban aviator Rosillo arrived in Havana from Key West at 8 10 am as officials offered a 10000 prize for the successful flight. A government cruiser and two gunboats patrolled the route amid attempts by another aviator to dissuade him from flying.
Key West May 17 Aviator Domingo Rosillo starts from the Florida East Coast terminal at 5 35 in an aeroplane bound for Havana. Augustine Paria a Cuban aviator, tries to follow but turns back due to high winds after threatening self harm and then aborting when his hydro aeroplane wires snap.
A meeting in Pocatello gathered twelve representatives of the post office department to form the Idaho Association of Assistant Postmasters as an auxiliary to the national body. Charles C. Wilson of Idaho Falls was elected president with L F Zundell of Pocatello as first vice president and Charles C Nelson of Boise as second vice president.
