Madrid May 17 Alfonso XIII attained his majority at sixteen and became king in fact. A royal procession formed at the Plaza de Armas and moved to the chamber of deputies where the king pledged to uphold the constitution before senators and deputies. The pageant was described as medieval magnificence.
Washington May 17 The House resumed consideration of the naval bill and read for amendment a $4000 allocation for a wall at Puget Sound naval station. Members criticized spending as excessive for too many stations and urged frugality. Jones amendment was adopted.
Governor Lee Hunt of the colony investigated the 1900s New Guinea killings of missionaries Revs. James Chalmers and F. Tompkins. Natives claimed the murders pursued their customs and revenge. Authorities located the killers and vowed punishment while skulls counted in the hundreds were reported in two villages.
President Roosevelt vetoed a bill that would relieve Harry Mixie, a bondsman for A. I. Holt, postmaster at Valdosta, Georgia, who defaulted to the government. The president said relief in this case would set a bad example.
In Hazleton Pennsylvania on May 17 President Mitchell reports no communication with the Civic Federation and no general strike. Mine owners have shut down indefinitely and fear strife if operations resume. Chicago reports coal price rises and a Springfield district dispute being settled.
London reports indicate Boer leaders show a hopeful attitude toward peace at Vereeniging. The British government credits farm rebuilding aid totaling about 5 million pounds as a major factor in progress. As Vereeniging outcomes loom, New York cables note markets fear prolonged negotiations and winter conditions may pressure surrender.
At dawn in Atlanta Fulton county and city police clashed with black residents after resisting arrest. Four white men and three black individuals died, several officers wounded, and an entire block burned. Governor Chandler ordered militia deployed to restore calm as sheriff Nelms urged restraint.
A grand concert is held at the city auditorium under the auspices of the Modern Woodmen of America. The event features community musicians and raises funds for lodge activities. Readers are invited to attend and support local fraternal work.

In Arlington Washington May 17 the remains of Major General William Starke Rosecrans were re interred at Arlington Cemetery under the Society of the Army of the Cumberland. President Roosevelt cabinet members senators representatives and many friends attended to pay last tribute. Military honors were accorded the remains.
Storm drives tug Bonita from Seattle towing four barges through the Strait of Fugga. Three barges cast adrift off Point Wilson while the remaining barge carrying coal reaches Port Townsend after a hard voyage. Machinery and supplies aboard belonged to the Alaska Packing Association.
Fire swept Houston Maine this afternoon destroying the Flagg block stable Baptist church and other structures. Aid to fight the blaze came from surrounding towns. By 3 PM losses were estimated at $500000 with several people badly burned or injured.
A mob in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio attempted to storm the county jail to seize three accused men for alleged assault on Miss Bertha Moore. Officers repelled the attack and the suspects were moved to Akron jail for safety and further proceedings.
By ordering ice from D Swineheart, customers are urged to leave orders at Palace and East Side meat markets and at L M Hopson and Co’s store. D Swineheart.
At nine this morning the Schiller piano contest standings show Public Schools leading with 5 400 points. Catholic School trails with 0.8? Timestamped figures show W.O0. W. at 1 800, Mormon Church 162, Episcopal Hospital 226, Methodist Church 4, Knights of Pythias 27.
Mobile Alabama May 17 The city council adopted an ordinance and made an appropriation for the extermination of mosquitoes by kerosene and paraffin oil.
Two carloads of equipment for J H Brady’s American Falls Power Light and Water Co arrived today and will be installed starting Monday at the Falls. The setup includes four 86 inch Sampson turbine wheels from Leffel Ohio a $1500 Lombard governor and pipes. Projected total investment about $12000 with General Electric machinery shipping June 8th. The substation nears completion and power should reach Pocatello by July 1st if no delays.
Secretary Moody and Secretary Hay report improved conditions in Martinique as refugees are calmer and less destitute than first feared. Pillaging occurs in northern districts, cattle may die from volcanic dust, and consular observations note charred remains and ruined offices in St Pierre. Relief supplies are deemed sufficient for Martinique, with suggestions to stop further subscriptions.
J. W. Mullen states he has been boycotted by the labor union for refusing to join. He urges the public to note the dispute and his stance amid the ongoing labor fracas.
