Flood and fire devastate central Hot Springs with millions in losses no confirmed death toll yet reported but rescues ongoing. Army aid considered as two bodies are recovered near the Missouri Pacific station and water fills Central Avenue nine feet deep.
A private message from Hot Springs reports heavy damage and many deaths from a storm. Transportation and communications are disrupted but food supplies exist to feed all residents for at least a week as more aid arrives. The telegram to Wilson and Company is signed by W. D. Matthews, Hot Springs branch manager.
Three air planes carrying Associated Press representatives left from Kansas City Muskogee Oklahoma and Eldorado Arkansas for Hot Springs. Each plane carried a representative of AP and local papers and all were due to arrive in Hot Springs in the afternoon.
A small fire was discovered at the Great Northern hotel and guests all escaped safely. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with no serious damage reported. Continued on page seven.
Denver voters braved a driving snow storm to elect a mayor and nine councilmen. Mayor Dewey C. Bailey faced seven challengers in what observers called the bitterest municipal campaign in the city’s history under a preferential voting system.
London May 15 AP Joe Beckett knocked out Dick Smith in the seventeenth round to win the one world championship of England.
Tegucigalpa May 15 AP Jess Carson posing as Clara Phillips husband told reporters the woman in custody is actually Mrs. Phillips and that another woman killed Alberta A. Meadows. He vows to fight extradition and would spend $10 000 in her defense while seeking a meeting with President Gutierrez.
Portland May 15 The water front strike of the Marine Transport Workers Industrial union was officially called off today at all Pacific coast ports except San Pedro California. Pickets disappeared yesterday and striking workers returned to work. James W Crichton local agent of the shipping board said no known members of the I W W will be employed on Shipping Board vessels.
In Wicklow County the last Republican band was captured. their leader Plunkett was killed and two machine guns were seized. In Rome, Mussolini promised to extend votes to certain categories of women.
May 15 AP reports a Texas tornado killed at least 21 people and injured around 200 while leaving 300 homeless. The storm carved a two to thirty mile path, razing roughly 50 houses. Doctors and nurses from nearby towns rushed to aid, with shelter and food provided for the displaced.
Reports say several people killed though unconfirmed while damages run in millions. The Marquette hotel lies in ruins with losses over 250 000 and Citizens National Bank remains the only building standing in the block. Power gas and telegraph lines are out and the districtwide search continues for victims. A Colorado pastor's study yields a newborn, and Mrs. Hambrey recounts a lost infant as a nearby home is swept away. The Western Union tally notes no confirmed deaths from the Marquette fire.

Pragmatic reports received by the Little Rock Democrat from Hot Springs suggest earlier claims of heavy loss of life were exaggerated though another report states six to eight people were dead.
Texarkana Texas May 15 AP rail connections with Hot Springs from the south have been severed. Two miles of track between Benton and Arkadelphia are washed out and no trains have reached Texarkana from Hot Springs since last night. Telegraph service with the city is down and Western Union wires are down between Texarkana and Hot Springs.
In Shashi in central China protests against Japan sparked deadly unrest. Chinese demonstrators boarded a Japanese river steamer prompting a Japanese gunboat from Hankow to rush to the scene. communication lines were cut and many were killed or injured.
New York May 15 AP plans for a mass meeting to protest renewed sugar law changes were to occur at a secret session led by F. Foster of New York Coffee and Sugar. Traders feared government actions and a ban on newsboys caused market excitement with no official disclosure.
The government plans to file a formal appeal in the Supreme Court tomorrow challenging a New York federal court ruling that refused an injunction against the New York Sugar Exchange. On Monday the Department of Justice will move to expedite the case for an early hearing.
French troops occupy Baden Aniline and Soda at Shafen and Hoechst dye works, and seize Limburg depot, post office, rail lines cut off. Ludwigshafen railways halted as depots fall under French control. Officials say occupation aims to remove dyes due under wartime peace terms, not long term seizure.
Thomas A Edison testified today for the government in the federal trade commission investigation into the Frances Wayers Lasky corporation and six affiliated film firms. He described the motion picture industry as the most powerful medium of influence over the public as he faced a barrage of questions.
A Topeka AP report says Thomas A 83 and his son and daughter were burned to death today when fire engulfed their farm home near Meridian. Authorities have not released full details and investigation continues.
Berlin May 15 The allied replies to Germanys reparations offer prompt discussion of a brief formal note to creditor powers. The note would request a commission of international economists to determine Germanys obligation and capacity to pay. Officials see this as a path to a final settlement based on economic principles and solvency.
Lausanne May 15 AP The allied Near East peace conference works to prevent a rift between Greece and Turkey over reparations. Former Premier Venizelos and Greek minister Alexander met Ismet Pasha, Turkish head, with no quick solution in sight. Venizelos stressed Greece’s stance and warned against paying more than the adjudged amount.
Paris reports confirm Miss Jvanita Bates of Ithaca New York among six killed in the Measures crash. The 32 year old woman was alone in the plane. Also killed were Lawrence Von Post Schwab of New York. Cause undetermined, with a likely propeller blade failure as a leading theory.
Mexicali Tower Calif May 15 AP French occupation of the Ruhr blocks German steel mills from supplying rails for 150 miles of railroad between Mexicali and the Gulf of California. Germany cancels contract with Mexico’s national railways, according to dispatches received today.
London May 15 AP Home Secretary Bridgman told the House of Commons that, following the House of Lords decision in the Art O'Brien case, the British government requests the Irish Free State to return to England all prisoners deported to Ireland.
Washington data show imports into the United States in March totaling 402 million dollars, up from 203.4 million in February and 256.2 million in March 1922. The figures reflect broad increases in goods entering the country during the month.
Caesar Attell of San Francisco aided two strangers who offered a sample of platinum at his pawnshop and agreed to a cash sale. He advanced 3500 dollars while the men took a 300 dollar diamond ring and promised 700 more later. Detectives found the strangers checked out of the St Francis hotel and left no address.
Los Angeles on May 15 AP reports U S. Sugar expert S M Shortridge of California says the main reason for high sugar prices is the surge in per person consumption since World War II. He notes Americans eat their weight in sugar each year averaging 105 pounds per person.
John Raymond received a state prison term of one to fourteen years for killing the famous swan "Mr Dooley" at Stowe Lake in Golden Gate Park. Five related charges were included in the case bearing on the act.
The body of Vorovsky, the assassinated Soviet emissary, left Lausanne for Moscow on a special car. Ahrens, wounded by Vorovsky’s attacker, insisted on accompanying the remains as a political protest. Ahrens was carried aboard the train and escorted to Berlin by a Swiss nurse.
