The Associated Press reports gas rationing registration entered its second day along the 117 state eastern seaboard. Citizens voiced grumbling over who gets how much and why as officials noted confusion about legitimate needs and some applicants exaggerating needs.
Rescue crews located 47 bodies of 54 miners trapped in a northern West Virginia coal mine after a Tuesday explosion. Crews fought rock and timber three miles underground, four members collapsed from exertion. Seventy miners escaped as fumes spread. cause under study. State guard patrolled as spectators and Morgantown students watched.
The Vichy government announced it had sent a reply to an American note regarding Martinique. The communication said the American note, dated May 5, was examined after Marshal Petain’s return from vacation. Laval discussed the issue with top officials before transmitting France’s response.
Alfred Sims, 20, received a 15 dollar fine and a suspended 30 day jail term after his auto struck a Union Pacific freight train near Rock Springs. The collision sent seven passenger cars off the track and injured 14 people. Sims claimed the opposing headlight blinded him but was not injured.

In Morristown Tennessee 14 year old Mattie Manning sits in Hamblen county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing after she struck and fatally harmed her 35 year old husband. Sheriff Creech said the girl confessed after extended questioning that the incident occurred Saturday. The jailer described her as a blue-eyed 14 year old in a blue dress with anklets and slippers, as Magistrate Hartman set Thursday for her hearing.
The Idaho supreme court upheld an Ada county district court order remanding Albert Bates to the state prison warden. Bates was convicted in Canyon county of grand larceny and of being a persistent law violator and sentenced to 5 to 20 years. The court ruled the information must charge persistent violator status to authorize the sentence.
Ottawa bulletin states a second vessel was sunk by submarine attack in the St Lawrence, near the earlier loss, with Navy Minister Angus MacDonald informing the House. In Nebraska, severe wind storms killed four near Osmond and Foster, damaging farms.
The War Production Board imposed a 60 day ban on all sales and deliveries of soft wood construction lumber by large producers, with exceptions to fulfill orders for the army, navy and maritime commission.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved reducing personal income tax exemptions to 510 for single filers and to 1200 for married couples.

The Army plans to recruit about 12 000 women for the Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps after President Roosevelt signs the enabling bill. War Department officials told Congress there is immediate need for thousands of auxiliaries, including around 10 000 for the air raid interceptor command. The corps could reach as many as 150 000 members, with an initial officer corps to train 25 30 volunteers per Army corps area. Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby is expected to lead the WAAC.
Forty four survivors including an eight man navy gun crew were landed at Norfolk May 9 by a passenger vessel. Nine of a 65 man African longshore crew were killed in the attack and another died en route to port. The ship was struck at night by one torpedo and did not sink immediately. This marked the navy's first announcement in the current German submarine campaign of an American ship loss in African waters.
A government official said the army and navy require 13,500 dentists immediately from the 71,500 practicing in the nation. The ratio would shift to one dentist per 500 men, with the army needing about 10,000 and the navy 2,000, plus 1,700 more for administration.
