Rebel forces numbering about 18,000 engaged in a Mexican conflict as fighting resumed. Rebel General Orozco directs operations from a safe distance while insurgents are exhausted and hungry, and federal troops are reportably well fed and fit.
El Paso reports renewed fighting between federals and rebels yesterday afternoon. General Orozco directed rebel forces personally from Yermo, fourteen miles north of Conejos, amid telegrams received today.
El Paso reports that Orozco's rebel advance guard is driven back toward Escalon as federal forces under Huerta and Tellez push from Bermsillo with about ten thousand troops. Aubert's four thousand men threaten to flank from the northwest. Deserts, water shortages, and fever affect both sides. Salazar wounded and routed, while Orozco’s base at Escalon remains contested.
The Oxford hotel in Downey Idaho recently completed and opened to the public has been leased to Miss Ida M. Arrol of Salt Lake City. She will take possession on May 15 and is known for managing the Touraine and New Linden hotels in Salt Lake City and prior work in Metropolis Nevada.
Washington May 11 A deal reached by majority and minority members of the special committee investigating Lorimer's election. Both reports will be filed in the senate May 20 and a vote taken during this session of Congress.
At Olyphant colliery No 1 Delaware Hudson a riot by foreigners left four ten year old George Robaresky dead after state troopers fired into the crowd as stones and clubs flew at police. The boy stood in his home yard as mounted officers advanced and a volley followed. Rioters later regrouped but authorities regained control.
Floods surge along the Mississippi with six inches of rain in four hours. In New Orleans citizens join convict gangs to shore up weak levees while many are stranded as crippled transit hampers return home. The river recedes after cresting a new record, and daylight brings hope for calmer weather.
Chicago May 11 fight street car conductors arrested on the west side after destroying two bundles of newspapers delivered to a newshow. Police drew revolvers to force surrender when the conductors tried to take away their eluba.
Investigators in Chicago probe the owner of a suitcase found near the Los Angeles house where a young Chicago woman was murdered. A note attached to the suitcase reads The finder may have this and Tam going straight to eternity Thomas C. Butt. Locals with the Butt surname say the described man resembles Thomas B. Butt, a G A R veteran who left a ranch in Nampa Idaho May 1 to live at the national soldier's home near Los Angeles.
President Taft arrived in Princeton New Jersey at six this morning to witness the inauguration of John Cirior Hibben as president of Princeton University. The ceremony marks Hibben's accession to the post amid campus and academic ceremonies.
Minneapolis May 11 The Northwest Development League offers a 5000 prize for the season’s best Northwest wheat bread and appearance. A modern farm tractor and tools will go to the winner in fall at the Northwest Products Exposition, with judging by top flour millers and bread makers.
Edward J. Williams, Archbald partner in an alleged bid to seize railroad property, testified at the hearing fogged by contradictions. He swore about an assignment with W. P. Boland called the silent party, then wavered on signing and recollection as questions mounted. Williams, born in South Wales, is 72 years old and amid cross examination.
Andre H Gobert and Max Germont of France won the men's doubles final in Stockholm, defeating Sweden’s Hetterwalt and Kempe with set scores 6-4 12-14 5-2 6-4. The victory marks the first event decided at the 1900 Olympic Games in lawn tennis.
The Democratic county central committee meets in Pocatello at the call of Chairman J B Bistline to arrange for selecting delegates to the state convention at Coeur d Alene. Committee members reportedly prefer omitting primaries and letting the committee choose delegates.
London May 11 The new minimum wage law for miners fails to halt unrest as Britain faces a coal trade crisis. Indications show a split in the Miners Federation with South Wales at the center where workers protest Lord Staldwyn’s wages board ruling delivering less than five shillings a day under the act.
San Francisco May 11 Ad Wolgast light weight champion returns to the ring after an appendectomy to meet Willie Ritchie in a four round bout this afternoon at the city arena.
Washington May 11 Taft campaign claims 483 delegates while conceding 23 to Roosevelt. Roosevelt manager Dixon cites 319 for Roosevelt and 143 for Taft with 144 uncontested. La Follette 36 and Cummins 10 appear in both sides’ tallies as efforts to settle control of the Republican national convention continue.
Phoenix May 11 The Kinney anti alien labor bill clear in senate eleven to eight. If enacted it would remove about twenty thousand foreigners from mining railroad and other hazardous jobs due to lack of English speech.
Professor C H Shattuck of the University of Idaho estimates Idaho's raw forest material at 100 billion feet, enough to build 7.5 million five room cottages and provide vast fuel wood. At current cutting about 700 million feet annually, the timber resource cannot be exhausted for 140 years, with annual growth exceeding cuts. The Idaho timber sector shows high capital investment, employment, and contribution to state wealth, while U S forest protection expenditures and fire patrols support ongoing wood production.
A large Liverpool crowd cheered J Bruce Ismay as he walked the Adriatic gangplank with his wife. Ismay lifted his bat in acknowledgment before stepping aboard the liner.
