The trial of W. D. Haywood, a Western Federation of Miners official, starts tomorrow after Judge Wood denied the defense motion for more specific charges. The ruling left the indictment considered sufficiently particular to meet justice.
Mrs Mary Vito and her mother Mrs Maria Brignold were found slashed to pieces at their east side home. Giovanni Vito, husband of Mary, is under arrest for the crime as police allege a dispute over money led to the killings. Vito claims two intruders committed the murders. investigators found two bloody razors hidden in the house.
In Butte on May 8 three suspects were in sheriff custody as a statewide search continued for two masked bandits who derailed the North Coast Limited near Welch's 18 miles from town. Engineer Crow was killed and Fireman Sullivan wounded. more than fifty men joined the manhunt in the hills and woods.
St Louis May 8 Oil magnate H Clay Pierce surrendered to police on an indictment from Texas charged with perjury in an affidavit to reinstate the Waters Pierce Oil Co in Texas. The affidavit aimed to overturn its ouster amid accusations it was part of Standard Oil Co.
Los Angeles May 8 All is ready for the heavyweight championship bout between Jack O'Brien and Tommy Burns. An estimated 490 000 seats will be sold for the event and the purse is set at 30000 dollars for the fighters.
Los Angeles May 8. The Imperial Council of Shriners meets to elect officers. Imperial Potentate Alvah P. Clayton is succeeded by Frank C. Roundy of Chicago. All other officers advance one rank, leaving one vacancy to be contested.
On May 8 in New York authorities ordered police reserves as a major longshoremen strike spreads. About ten to twelve thousand dock workers walked out, halting operations on nearly all steamship lines serving the city.
Evans Flack, the sheep herder who recently shot and killed John Hessel at Alex Beckstead's sheep camp seven miles north of Bancroft, appeared before Justice of the Peace Van Reuth for a preliminary examination. County Attorney Gray prosecutes. self defense is claimed. Several witnesses testified. adjourned to 2:30 PM for more testimony as the hearing likely continues.
The City Council debates friction between the new police chief and veteran volunteers. Two new members are hired at 75 dollars per month each. A Sunday closing matter will be discussed at the next meeting.
Los Angeles reports say the Seventh regiment of the California National Guard has been ordered north at once by phone. San Francisco notes quiet streets but heavy police guard around United Railways barns at Turk and Fillmore as authorities anticipate more rioting and possible attempts to run streetcars today.
D W Church of the Pocatello Commercial club reports a letter from J F Lever of Eureka California proposing a woolen mill here. Lever seeks a free site and a 2500 bonus from citizens and plans to push the project at the next club meeting.
Six patients are receiving treatment at the new Pocatello General Hospital under Dr. W A Wright. Mrs John Morgan, injured in a fall, underwent a successful operation this morning. Mrs Dora Hemmit will be operated on tomorrow for appendicitis. Charles Lamoreaux, Tribune job department foreman, was operated on for an old hand injury. Dr Wright reports all patients are progressing finely.
The Attorney General ordered a commutation of the five year sentence for the Stillwater Oklahoma post office robbery. President approved after 40 000 signers petitioned, noting January escaped married and operated in Kansas City as Anderson before re arrest. Prominent supporters backed his case.
The council denied Perkins and McCarthy's liquor license petition. It authorized temporary firemen, ordered sidewalk enforcement on Arthur avenue, and heard a large petition for extending the North Hayes sprinkling district. It adopted a cemetery lot price increase, awarded a street sprinkling contract to George Gittens Jr., and began work on park dump fencing and street bridge repairs. The old liquor ordinance was read again and again rejected. Adjourned at midnight.
A full city council met led by Mayor Loux in a lengthy session. Debated were a staff sale by the volunteer fire department, a liquor license petition, sidewalk mandates on Arthay avenue, and extending a sprinkling district. Vote on the license was 6 to 1 against.
County Attorney George K. Gray advised Grace Loughran that April school elections in this county were illegal. The law changing election time lacked an emergency clause and did not take effect until 60 days after the governor signed it. The ruling affects nine counties and calls for new elections in June.
Buenos Ayres reports the Poitou en route from Marseilles to this port wrecked off Uruguay with about 200 on board, yielding about 100 passengers and crew confirmed dead. Montevideo cites nearly 200 rescued passengers being brought to port.
The Tribune corrects the proposed baseball excursion to Twin Falls, date now set for May 26. Manager Milt Stern aims to field a special train with the Indians to draw a large crowd to visit Shoshone Falls, Blue Lakes, and nearby sights.
Seven young ladies of the social set host a May 20 charity ball at Mc Nichols and Wrights ballroom. Tickets are selling fast as they promote a grand social event while supporting the new Pocatello general hospital. Proceeds aid the hospital fundraiser and attendees are urged to purchase promptly for a fine evening.
Mrs Frances Edwards of Henry county Missouri is declared rightful heir to the Frederick Bush estate valued at 10000 dollars after probate Judge Imel orders the administrator to transfer assets. The claim followed a fortune reading in Idaho and hinges on matching photographs of her father Andrew Bush and Frederick Bush.
