Blast Claims 15 Lives at Five Triumph Explosives

A blast at Five Triumph Explosives in Elkton Maryland killed 15 workers and injured at least 54 with 5 in serious condition. A second explosion, a fire, and widespread damage followed as officials investigated the cause and workers returned to assist in rescue and salvage. A U S reconnaissance group reported twelve Zeros over Cape Gloucester and Wewak in the New Guinea theater. Lt. Browning led a Liberator group that avoided attack in clouds with no losses on either side. Browning, a 1939 Idaho Southern graduate, is stationed in Idaho with wife Betty in Pocatello.

Senate Rejects Plan To Grant War Labor Board Power

AP reports the Senate voted 45 to 34 against giving the war labor board statutory power to settle disputes and enforce decisions by injunctions. Other items note Chiang Kai-shek’s forces claim Taicheng mountains losses, Mussolini praising Africa return, Idaho Falls plant sale approved, and overtime pay bill passage boosting about 1.5 million federal workers.

Boston elevated railway redeems seven mills tax tokens

Michael H. Cullen, Boston elevated railway general auditor, informed the Arizona tax commission that 7 one-mill sales tax tokens were in the railway's possession and a check covered the amount. The city incurred a three-cent stamp to redeem the seven mills.

London reports the largest four engined bomber force yet over Germany dropped about 1500 tons of bombs on Dortmund in the Ruhr. City Short On Potatoes Hits Pittsburgh Markets

Pittsburgh housewives hunted for potatoes as dealers reported an unprecedented shortage on the wholesale market. Compromise Tax Bill Passes With 20 Percent Deduction

The House approved a pay-as-you-go compromise by 313 to 95 to wipe out 1942 income tax liabilities for about 90 percent of taxpayers and impose a 20 percent withholding on wages effective July 1. Senate action was urged as leaders eyed rapid passage.
