Idahoans protested railroad freight rate increases seeking to block a 13 percent rise. The brief, filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission, argues higher rates harm farmers and Idaho industries. the case involves state agencies and several producer associations.
Cloudy with showers likely into Tuesday. Cooler conditions with lows near 40 and highs around 55 expected tomorrow.
Rudolph Sebern 30 was buried in a six foot sewer ditch in his yard. His four year old daughter Nancy alerted a neighbor Clyde Fairchild who dug him free. Firemen removed five pounds of dirt and he was taken to hospital in critical condition with chest injuries.
In New York a magistrate issued a summons against Leo Durocher for simple assault at the Polo Grounds after a Giants Dodgers game. The case, requested by Fred Boysen’s attorney, requires Durocher to appear next Monday in upper Manhattan court. In Washington, Robert Lovett linked NATO to Russia’s reaction to the European recovery plan. In Wilkes-Barre a five-year-old boy died in a chained crib. his mother had padlocked the crib with a heavy netting after he kept running away.
Russell Martini, 21, killed at the door of the Zurfley home in Mineral City. His estranged wife Gladys, 16, also killed after he attacked with a box saying they would die. Three-month-old Gary George Martini injured. Richard Zurfley, 21, Peggy Zurfley, 18, and Gertrude Beers, 38, injured. Martini had filed for divorce last month.
The Bannock county commission pressed for swift construction of a new courthouse. R. T. Hale and Jack Nets opposed shifting the present high school for joint city and county offices, a plan discussed with Pocatello and the city council, with Chairman W. H. Jensen noncommittal.
Steve Miller of Buckskin Valley near Rapid Creek complains that Francis Cates moved a house off his Bannock County farm without permission. Sheriff Alma Marley is asked to investigate and arrange arrest if warranted. Deputies are investigating the case.
Fred Robinson, who runs a club since 1946, traded 29,080 dimes worth of 10-cent Roosevelt pieces for a new car. He had saved the coins at his establishment and used them to purchase the vehicle for 129 pounds in dimes.
Shanghai reports traffic suspended on the last railway escape from communists to South China. Inside the city the money market crashed as garrison outlawed free trading in prewar silver dollars under threat of death. The Red radio claimed eight Chinese government armies were wiped out and parts of the country faced chaos.
A two day tornado outbreak across Oklahoma Texas Mississippi and Louisiana killed nine people and injured nearly one hundred. Damage is estimated at two million dollars with sixteen tornadoes in Oklahoma alone five deaths and about seventy five injuries near Norman. Four deaths reported in Texas and damage also in Homer Louisiana. Continued on page two.
May day observances around the world highlighted a sharp divide between communist and non communist blocs. In Moscow Stalin reviewed a Red Square parade as Vasilevsky touted alleged American war plans while Warsaw Prague and other capitals staged counter demonstrations. Yugoslavia challenged the bloc with sharp charges in Belgrade. In the United States Loyalty Day and leftist marches crowded streets four to one, and Barkley defended the American way of life before 30 000 Catholic rally attendees.
A slight earthquake was felt across a wide area of southern California around 3:29 a.m. with no damage reported. In South Gate Officer Hans Meyer described walls shaking and pictures rattling while a downtown switchboard operator said the tremor was felt on the fifth floor. The sheriff’s office received few calls and the tremor reached Blythe Indio San Bernardino Banning and Riverside.

The Most Rev Edward J Kelly bishop of Boise presided at the dedication of Holy Rosary Catholic church in Idaho Falls at Ninth Street and Lee Avenue. Boise Gov C A Robins proclaimed May 17 to 23 as Be Kind to Animals Week.
William Warner, 24, of Mundelein Ill and John Kowalski, 23, of Pittsburgh Va, identified by John Harwood, 40, of Grace as robbers who blinded tied and dumped him after stealing a car. Alberta Raymond, 22, of Oakland Calif, known as Penny, also involved. Injuries reported. armed robbery charge to be filed.
Louis Palmer, guardian for Ronald Palmer, filed in district court a suit seeking 50 660 50 damages against Christian Jensen over a November 9 1948 highway incident near Preston. Jensen allegedly parked blocking the highway then jumped aside into Palmer's motorcycle path causing a crash that injured Ronald Palmer and wrecked the bike.
Sandra the German shepherd from the coast guard K-9 corps tracked a two year old boy missing since Saturday afternoon. After a 100 man search failed, the dog located Daryl Webley nearly a mile from home at 4 am, cold and wet but unharmed except for scratches.
Isaac Jackson aged 30 of Fort Hall was arrested after a Sunday 1 15 a m hit and run in the 200 block North Main. Police say he left the scene after colliding with Ernest Rom mell Rom mell 26 of Inkom who was leaving a parking stall. Jackson pleaded not guilty in police court. Damage cited to Rom mell sedan fenders bumper and Jackson car fenders running board. A separate 1 20 p m Sunday collision in Hast Center area involved Clifford Brady 22 of 412 North Fifth and Richard Benton 18 of 225 West Bridges causing damage to both autos.
In Philadelphia at the Belmont filter station a bus driver Adolph Schwartz, 20, lowered into a 40 inch test well filled with six feet of water and saved 14 year old John Morrell Jr. as he slipped through the screen. A companion James Ford, 15, alerted authorities.
House Speaker Rayburn signals five major amendments to the Taft Hartley bill after meeting with President Truman. The changes would address national emergency strikes, non communist affidavits, free speech, good faith bargaining, and union financial reports. Debate resumes tomorrow as Republicans and southern Democrats push alternatives.
Idaho Falls civic leaders urged Union Pacific to add service rather than cut schedules. The Idaho Public Utilities Commission held a hearing on the railroad's request to discontinue two daily trains to Butte Montana.
The American National Livestock Assn announced its opposition to the Truman administration's proposed new farm program. It criticized government subsidies and controls as unsound and warned that grants of authority could regulate the entire industry.
