Rescue crews recovered 11 more bodies in Centralia No 5 mine raising dead to 78 with 53 identified. Of 142 miners underground 33 remain unaccounted and 31 rescued while 111 expected as toll climbs. Ventilation work and debris hinder ongoing search three miles from the shaft.
Moscow reports that the council of foreign ministers failed to settle the Austria German assets issue and sent it back for Austrian deputies. The Big Four continued bargaining over German reparations with Tran signaling a claim of 955 million dollars for war damages. Molotov said continuing reparations is the key Russian aim while the United States and Britain oppose a compromise. The coordinating committee finalized its draft after an all night session, but informants note ongoing disagreements among the powers.
The Senate Finance Committee postponed action on the House tax cut bill to study government costs for next year. Chairman Millikin indicated hearings may be postponed for weeks and signaled possible compromises to secure White House opposition. The measure would cut about 30 percent for lower brackets and 20 percent for higher brackets.
Charles Wesley Thomas 44 and his wife Geraldine Thomas face district court charges for obtaining 2500 dollars from a Denver airline ticket agent and conspiring to commit false pretenses. Thomas allegedly married the victim in a ceremony with his wife as witness. Bond set at 7500 for him and 1000 for her. both remain jailed. FBI cites aliases and a Salt Lake City federal impersonation charge.

A witness testified at an eighth army war crimes trial that three Japanese defendants pulled whiskers from the beards of American brothers John O. Zivic and his siblings Michael and Thomas while they were prisoners of war. The brothers, members of the House of David, were identified with Boise Idaho addresses for John and unspecified locations for the others. The defendants named were Sgt Kyusho Masaki Sgt Matsusaburo Shirakawa and Capt Masashi Sato the Hanaoka camp commandant.
Warren R. Austin told the United Nations Security Council that U S plans to aid Greece and Turkey with 400 million dollars support the world charter principles. He stressed respecting each member’s chosen system, provided it is free and nonthreatening, and said the aid would bolster collective security and United Nations objectives.
Washington reports a $2,471,498,548 deficiency appropriation bill moving to the House with Appropriations Committee backing. The Senate sent a seven month sugar rationing and price control extension back to the House with minor changes. It would guarantee 35 pounds per person for home use this year and set aside 50 000 tons for new industrial users. The House already approved the seven month extension from next Monday.

About 100000 Germans rioted in Düsseldorf in a two hour protest over food shortages. They pelted British occupied buildings and attacked military vehicles, overturning two cars and throwing one into a park lake. British and American correspondents were aboard one vehicle.

Drought and excessive rains crippled wheat crops, prompting government cattle slaughter at Christmas as famine worsened.
Arvil Miller president of the Idaho Sugar Beet Growers association said two more years of planting restrictions are likely after a Washington conference on proposed sugar legislation. He noted new laws will include beet acreage limits similar to 1937 acts and Utah plus eastern Idaho growers have lost ground in acreage history. Miller also said extension of the emergency farm labor action seems likely.
Warden McMillan of Salt Lake City, 37, convicted by eight men for robbing Hazel's inn in Sunset on November 25, 1946. Loot included $250 in cash and another $250 from customers plus a $2,000 fur coat. Testimony by Sailor Owen Groggon cited a tattooed word L O V E on the robber’s fingers. Sentencing deferred to next month. McMillan has prior burglary terms and faces five years to life. Local detectives arrested him in Salt Lake City with a woman in a beer tavern.
Rumors place Mr. and Mrs. 8. EB Brady visiting Salt Lake and planning to move from their Bannock hotel apartment to the Brady home on North Arthur. Circulating reports say talks were moving toward selling Brady interests in the Bannock to a Boise group led by Virgil McGee Jack Simplot J. L. Eberle and others, though no definite outcome has emerged.
Two men questioned for motive after a triple shooting in Salt Lake City, where Cecil F. Matthews 78, and La June Mart 24 were killed and Frank Chamberlin 27 wounded. Neighbors had reported threats against Matthews. a masked gunman fired seven shots in a West Third South Street apartment.
Governor C A Robins announced the three year appointment of Dr E F Miller of Idaho Falls to the Idaho state board of optometry examiners effective immediately. Other board members are Drs G P Salle of Nampa and John E Holmes of St Anthony. Robins also named Vivian Hansen of Boise as state training school inspector, in her role as assistant director of nurses at St Alphonsus hospital school of nursing.
Former Pennsylvania governor George H. Earle told the House Committee on Un American Activities that without the atomic bomb the United States would face a Soviet advance across Europe and much of Asia. He named Sweden Switzerland and Spain as islands of resistance and warned Moscow seeks world domination by violence and infiltration. Governor Kim S. Sisler testified CIO United Auto Workers leaders are captives of the Communist party and aligned with party lines in union activities.
The army announces 55 posts and airfields will close or be reassigned with 35 surplus and 20 in active status. About 42,000 civilian employees will be released, bringing civilian staffing to 358,683, roughly 25,000 below prewar levels. Surplus sites include Pasco Washington depot and Fort Douglas Utah and Walla Walla airfield. caretaker sites include Dugway Utah and Spokane field slated for inactivation then reactivation as a heavy bombardment station.
Pioneer league directors will hold a meeting at 1 p m in the Bannock hotel to arrange for date changes to accommodate the Salt Lake City club. Jack Halliwell, league president, said this late today.
AFL leader John L. Lewis blamed J. A. Krug for criminal negligence after a Centralia Illinois coal mine explosion killed miners. Speaking to a Senate subcommittee on James Boyd’s nomination as Bureau of Mines director, Lewis urged rejection of Boyd.
