The coal industry seeks court help to appoint an umpire over paying miners pensions from a 30 million dollar health and retirement fund. John L. Lewis and Ezra Van Horn clash, miners walked out last week, halting steel and coal plants and curtailing rail service and exports.
In Baker, Oregon, professional babysitter Catherine Elizabeth Douglass, 66, was found beaten to death on a country road after responding to a late call. Coroner A L Schroeder noted severe head injuries and ruled out robbery as motive. Neighbors said she left her apartment after a 10 pm phone call and drove away. three girls found the body while traveling from Pocatontas district to Baker. Douglass had two sons, Donald Duane Douglass of Baker and Lloyd Raymond Douglass of Burley Idaho.

Western congressmen aim to boost forest highway spending to 26 million dollars this year despite the house approving only five million. Joseph A. Albi former Italian consular here proposed a letter writing campaign Saturday to keep the communists from winning the elections in Italy next month. He urged American citizens of Italian ancestry to write to friends and relatives urging them to vote against the communists. He said many votes can be turned against the communists if all Americans of Italian ancestry write promptly.
The Associated Press weighted index for 35 commodities fell to 184.44, its lowest since last July, with wheat May futures down to about 2.31 a bushel. Hog and cattle prices rose modestly at Chicago yards, while New York stocks rallied strongly in a brisk Saturday session.

Don Donald 27 consigned by Herbert Chandler Baker Oregon stockman was bought for Fred Hoops of Twin Falls by Orion Butler of Kimberly. The 1800 price led the sale and topped other bids by several hundred dollars. Chandler previously had the top price at last fall's sale.
Loretta Young won best actress for The Farmer’s Daughter and upset Rosalind Russell. Ronald Colman received best actor as the king of Hollywood alongside learners from Gentlemen’s Agreement. Edmund Gwenn was chosen best supporting actor for Miracle on 34th Street. Kazan won directing for Gentlemen’s Agreement and Celeste Holm earned supporting actress.
The United States with France and Britain proposed that Trieste be returned to Italy, aiming to curb Italian communists and their Yugoslav backers as Italy heads toward national elections. The move would alter the 1947 peace treaty creating the UN administered territory, seen as part of Washington’s anti-communist foreign policy.

A single engine plane crashed on a Pennsylvania mountain top killing eight people including a one year old girl. Victims include owner George H. Armitage 58 of Providence Rhode Island pilot Herman Burlingame 30 of Cranston Rhode Island his wife Ruth and their baby Kathleen Mrs Marvin Preston of Reading Ridge Connecticut Dr W B Naxon Fleming New Jersey and Frank Fletcher Stamford Connecticut. Six prize dogs also died while being sent to a dog show in St Louis.
