Phillip Thompson a 30 year old laborer is held on a murder charge after a dice game dispute in a Salt Lake City basement turned deadly. Frank Brown. 51, was shot in the chest. two others Arthur Owens and Broadus Childs Jr. were wounded. Thompson surrendered hours later after witnesses overpowered him and took the pistol.
Richard Ralph Rocks, 33, died at home Saturday night from burns after a pipe he lowered into a well touched electric wires. His father George Rocks and Ward McGilvra suffered minor burns while assisting. Rocks had 25 months in the marine corps before leaving last May to help run the family ranch.

John Holbrook of Weiser a veteran of General Patton's Third Army joined the Russell Smith post of the American Legion. Inducted at 15 after registering as 18, he was honorably discharged in France last November when his true age was learned. He says he will reenlist on his 18th birthday if the war continues.
Governor Gossett signs emergency bill raising Idaho gas tax from five to six cents per gallon. The extra penny funds road building with federal matching money for two years. Dealers pass the increase to consumers making regular gas 25 cents and high octane 27 cents per gallon. The session also funds teacher raises, university operating costs, school district distributions, and an education survey commission.
U S submarines report 15 more enemy vessels sunk in the Pacific including five warships. The latest tally lists three destroyers two escort vessels and ten merchant ships among the kills. Total enemy ships sunk now 1 072 with 117 warships and 955 non combatant vessels.
At the YMCA Older Boys legislative assembly in Boise delegates from southern Idaho high school age groups rejected a one year government military conscription proposal. The plan was amended to compulsory physical education but still defeated by a narrow margin with about ninety delegates in attendance.
The Ludendorff bridge central span collapsed amid heavy rescue efforts and men were pulled from the Rhine. Engineers worked on repairs and officials believed the bridge would be back in operation, despite deaths and injuries during the disaster.

Lt. Joseph W. Wright of Spokane, a Bushnell General hospital patient, had his right foot severed by a propeller after his bomber split in midair over Germany. He crawled through the nose, pulled the ripcord, and the silk turned him. He bled freely to cleanse the wound and was later repatriated from a Belgian hospital.

United Air Lines announced a record net income of $6,614,991 before postwar adjustments, equal to $4.12 per share on outstanding common stock. This exceeds 1943 earnings of $4,203,276.
