At Joliet Michigan on March 14 four convicts rioted as 1,100 inmates ran amuck in the old state penitentiary wrecking shops dining hall and kitchen. Guards on the wall felled three attackers and Captain Davenport suffered a broken arm amid the assault. Warden Hill blamed public sympathy for sparking the mutiny.
Sheriffs William Woodward and Deputies Jim Matthews and L B Tolley stopped a three man breakout at the county jail in the early hours. Charles Cornish LeRoy Meyers and Le Lucero tied blankets as a rope and sawed bars to escape, but was foiled by vigilant guards who had monitored the area for days and then from the jail area heard the plan in progress and sprang into action.
Louise Marshall, cashier at the Strand Theatre on North Main Street, was robbed of $60 at gunpoint. Harry Benson was arrested within 20 minutes, with witnesses saying two men were involved. Benson claimed the money or gun were not with him when captured.
Boise high school basketball team won the southern district championship by defeating Mountain Home 31 to 16. Boise now leads two games to one in the three game series with Mountain Home, who won the first game in their home city.
Mackay girls defeat American Falls 33 to 23 to claim the eastern Idaho girls basketball title. Utah notes fair Sunday and Monday with a temperature change.
The city outlines three major events in 1933: April 30 to May 2 on early west life, the American Legion Days of Forty‑nine, and a July 3–4 pioneer celebration under the chamber of commerce. City urges full civic participation. Beards for men over 21 and vintage frocks for women encouraged to showcase western history. Officials hope nationwide interest and Fort Hall centennial framing by 1934.

In Spokane on March 14 Mrs. Anna Galloway was arrested and charged with first degree assault for throwing acid over the face and body of 22 year old Miss Mary Asher. Miss Asher was in serious condition and likely disfigured for life. Galloway admitted her part in the attack.
Beverly Hills Calif March 14 Will Rogers comments on Washington Progressives who may wield next year’s government. He notes both parties fear their influence and predicts future dealings with the young La Follette, implying their rising power.
Former Idaho governor David W. Davis told the U S attorney he received over $8,000 for praising a 12 volume Lincoln biography and supplying Lincoln League members to publishers Parke Austin and Lipscombe Inc. He faces questions in a probe into the firm’s operations linked to Lincoln Memorial University which is said to receive five to ten percent of sales, totaling up to $40,000.
Nola Schwaar six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Schwaar of Salt Lake City was struck and killed by a car late today. Driver Howard Debenham eighteen and cousin Wayne Debenham eighteen were detained pending an investigation. The driver said the child ran into the street from the sidewalk as he approached an intersection.

Ruth Mabey of Pebble, an eighth grader from a one room rural school near Bancroft, defeated 31 contestants to win the county spelling bee at the high school auditorium. Katherine Green of McCammon finished second on the word harass. Mabey will represent the county at the district contest in Pocatello. Green is an alternate.
A L Coey retires today as Utah division superintendent of the Short Line and is moved to Salt Lake City as Salt Lake division superintendent of the L A and I. Coey has led the Utah division since 1928 and earned many friends in Pocatello where he is active in Rotary. Mrs. Coey visits San Francisco relatives. Replacing him is R E Brooks, formerly Wyoming division superintendent of the Union Pacific with Cheyenne headquarters.
Winners in the city instrumental solo contest held Saturday evening at the high school advance to the district high school contest in Blackfoot on April 17 and 18. Barney Berlinger, noted as the country’s most versatile track and field man, captured the University of Illinois relay carnival all around championship for the third straight year in Champaign. This marks the first time a performer has achieved three victories in the event.
County plans a 150000 road budget matching 1930 levels with two thirds for construction and one third for maintenance. W P Havenor says about 15 miles of roads in the three commissioner districts will be graded and surfaced.
The Union Pacific 1931 budget outlined new work and maintenance of way totaling over 70 million dollars. The plan anticipates major spending in various divisions with notable allocations for Pocatello including 19,500 for new machinery and 13,000 for shop tools alongside general store upgrades.
Ben Carrothers a local Negro and former Del Monte pool hall proprietor on Fast Clark street was sentenced to 18 months in McNeil Island penitentiary fined 500 dollars and seven months in the county jail by Judge C C Cavanah after a guilty verdict. He faced nine counts for possession and sale of whiskey and maintaining a nuisance. William Mangle co defendant pleaded guilty earlier but had some counts dismissed and faced 250 dollar fine plus a year and a day in prison and five months county jail to run consecutively.
Edward Fordyce a 66 year old retired Asotine county rancher was killed when a second car crashed into the stranded vehicle as he stopped to help. Fordyce of Clarkston leaves a widow six children and his mother. Hartig of Cloverland arrested on open charge. Myrtle Young injured by glass.
F M Bistiine city chairman presided at a local Democrats meeting in Judge Callis's office. A five member advisory committee was appointed to report on mayoralty timing before the April 8 city convention. Ben Davis was unanimously favored though he declined to be considered.
Governor C Ben Ross voiced satisfaction with Idaho's legislature for enacting income and power taxes and approving a constitutional amendment to permit income taxes The session drew mixed reviews with Senator Holder criticizing the tax bills legality and lack of tax solution while tax consultant Axel Ramstead urged new revenue strategies The governor pledged to study the tax problem next year and aim for relief for agricultural and real estate interests through coordinated tax reform plus potential savings of about 2 million dollars across taxing units.
