The Allegheny county alms house near Angelica New York burned after a gas explosion in the basement. Seven women and two men died. head stableman Charles Sanborn died while rescuing inmates. The fire caused about 100000 dollars in losses.
Fire swept through the D. H. Peery estate building in Ogden last night causing about 300000 in damage to the structure and contents. The Last and Thomas store stock valued at 140000 and the Wis taria confectionary stock valued at 12000 were ruined. Police Sergeant C E Noble was injured while warning occupants. fire believed caused by defective wiring.
An early morning is recorded as a moderate earthquake at Georgetown University in Washington with a 38 minute duration and a 1600 mile distance estimate from the capital. Separate reports note a heavy tremor near Naples and Foggia damaging instruments and a Dalmatian zone quake near the Adriatic.
In Virden Illinois deputies itemize new leads in the vanishing of Father A Vraniak pastor of Sacred Heart church. A Dubuque Iowa woman claims her brother, Father Arthur Belknap of Lead South Dakota, was slain and the described killer matches a man under surveillance near Virden. Calls report a man phoned that Vraniak was seen with two men en route to St Louis. Search continues between here and St Louis. The Dubuque angle ties to the Belknap murder case with Rolando linked to Virden correspondence and notes.
Robert Patterson of Dayton Ohio first vice president of Rotary International led the morning session at the Fifth district conference in Pocatello Idaho. The event featured the keynote address illustrated by slides and moving pictures and noted the district now includes twenty one clubs with activities in Jerome Emmett and Wallace.
The Agriculture Department's survey shows a 26 percent drop in average value per acre of plowed land. On March 1 this year the average was $66.53, down from $69.89 last year and far below $82.78 in 1921 and $90.01 in 1920.

About 15 000 mine workers will gain a ten percent wage increase effective March 16 in copper mines across Arizona. The announcement was posted at mines in Douglas Bisbee Globe Miami Jerome and other towns, with roughly 4500 workers in the Globe Miami district and 2500 in the Bisbee district affected.

Peter Ackerman, a German citizen, was commuted from a 15 year sentence for stabbing a U S soldier three years served and released to return to Germany. He claimed defense of his sister during the incident in Cologne. Ottawa reports the House of Commons defeated a resolution to demobilize the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
London reports a Daily Telegraph diplomat says Germany has a peace plan with guarantees to France and international supervision of its finances. Berlin may wait for stronger British backing before revealing details. Washington says officials know nothing of a new German reparations plan.
Dublin March 15 AP A brave national soldier halted a runaway engine between Thomastown and Athlone after seizing the locomotive and boarding it. Brady, on duty in the cabin, removed his shoes and controlled the engine, bringing the train to a stop about 500 yards from an approaching passenger train.
Pasadena reports a Sierra Madre fire that began yesterday and spread rapidly but was under control last night with renewed fury. About 350 forest workers fought the blaze as estimates placed watershed damage at 5 million dollars though property loss was expected to stay under 300 thousand. The Pacific Electric scenic line and Echo Mount and Mount Wilson observatories avoided damage.
