The Idaho Supreme Court heard two hours of arguments on the state 2 percent retail sales tax act. Opponents challenge constitutionality and refer- endum validity while supporters defend its purpose and distributive relief use.
In San Mateo California on March 12 a Japanese houseboy Frank Mayega 39 attacked the home of Mrs Minna Urabe using an ax killing Mrs Urabe and badly slashing her two daughters Sylvia 13 and Alice 7. He fled as residents hunted for him. The weather forecast calls for fair tonight and Friday with little change.
Idaho Democrats will meet in Boise on March 28 to fix dates and venues for the 1936 state delegate and platform conventions. The call for the meeting was issued by Mrs. Frank E. Johnesse of Boise, chairman of the state central committee. Republicans had previously set their convention dates and locations.
Governor Harold G. Hoffman declared he will not grant another reprieve for Bruno Richard Hauptmann, with execution set for the week of March 30. Defense hopes hinge on possible new evidence from Dr. John F. Condon as he returns from Panama.
Boise March 12 The defense rested at noon in the murder trial of Mrs Hazel Hess a middle aged housekeeper charged with killing her husband Louis N Hess Miss Wanda Hess daughter testified she was told by Dr Mary Calloway to tell the coroner s jury her mother was insane The defense and prosecution prepared to argue this afternoon with a jury expected to hear the case this evening Dr C R Lowe superintendent of Blackfoot State Hospital for the Insane testified the defendant was able to distinguish right from wrong before and after the crime
McCammon high School defeated Aberdeen Tigers 52 to 43 to stay in the district title hunt at Sava Hot Springs. McCammon led each period 16-11 25-23 and 41-31 as Aberdeen twice led and tied the game three times before the final buzzer.
The United States conference of mayors urged President Roosevelt to fund an additional 2.34 billion dollars to carry WPA work into the next fiscal year. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia presented a unanimous report from 100 big city leaders stating work relief is preferable to dole and will yield lasting public improvements for about 25 million residents.
Florence Glover Lucey a 58 year old wife of a southwestern oil man shot herself in her Los Angeles apartment rather than face impending blindness. She left a note asking that her two nephews and others be informed. Lucey once moved in Washington and European society and faced despondency due to cataracts. Her husband Captain John F. Lucey a World War II era associate of Hoover had a noted oil career beginning in 1909 and they married in Wisconsin in 1912.
In Los Angeles on March 12, Pat, the Alkire couple’s twentieth child, arrived weighing seven pounds two ounces at the general hospital maternity ward. Mrs. James Alkire, 41, expects him to be the last, with five brothers and nine sisters already surviving.
In Chicago on March 12 Miss Ruth R McNamara challenged Senator James Hamilton Lewis in a Democratic senatorial race. Lewis recalled Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms’ prior candidacy while McNamara retorted that the verse also binds him to her supporters and people.
A police guard protecting Prof. Luis Jiminez Asua was shot and killed during an attempted assassination in Madrid. Jiminez escaped unharmed as clashes disrupted the university. Rightists were arrested for firing into the mob amid widespread unrest and emergency land measures were ordered in five Spanish provinces.
Snow covered Wisconsin Minnesota and parts of Iowa and northern Illinois as a March blizzard returned. Chicago's mild spell ended with snow flurries and high winds creating drifts that blocked some highways in northern Minnesota.
H Tracy Martin arrived in Boise from Washington DC to take duties as chief engineer of the Idaho Works Progress Administration.
Adolf Hitler told a crowd of about 60 000 in Karlsruhe that Germany has neither the intention nor the will to attack France Czechoslovakia or Poland. He urged peace and common sense while denying plans for war and asserting Germany will defend sovereignty of 14 000 000 people. He warned Russia against interference and stated Germany offered a magnanimous proposal to other nations.

The sub committee also lifted a gag after chairman Doughton said he was not responsible for the restriction and that Hill could release information he deemed proper.
Sen Rush D Holt accuses Hopkins of a sham WPA probe in West Virginia and plans a Senate assault. Hopkins backs state administrator McCullough and clears Neely while Holt labels the report whitewash and vows to bring the issue to the people.
Washington reports January real estate foreclosures dropped 29.3 percent from the previous January. The Home Loan Bank Board released the figures, indicating a notable decline in foreclosures for the period.
London reports say Locarno treaty signatories declared Germany's Rhineland troop move a clear Versailles and Locarno violation. France pressed for demilitarization, Britain warned it may be forced to aid France. A communique said the League council would decide on the violation.
Paris reports the French Senate ratified the Franco Soviet mutual assistance pact by 233 to 52 after chamber approval earlier. The piece notes Hitler cited Locarno as violated and outlines ambitious mobilization figures and potential alliances with Russia Little Entente Poland.
The senate appropriations committee approved a record peace-time fund of 600 million dollars for the War department to sustain a 165000-strong army, with additional 50 million dollars added to boost total military and civilian army activity funding and to support rivers and harbors projects nationwide.
