Both houses met after noon to push income tax and power tax bills toward final passage. Amendments to the income tax bill will be corrected, and a modified income tax amendment proposing a constitutional limit on rates is being prepared as a substitute. Senator Callahan pledged a nonpartisan taxing study bill before adjournment.
Principal Walter H Cleare spoke on American Genius at Roosevelt P T A on Wednesday evening. Doris Bishop Camp Fire leader discussed aims and objects while Lena Babcock and Mrs George Hickok provided music. Attendance honors went to Miss Jacks room. Miss Dorothy King performed a humorous reading.
Six weeks list names four of five first honors winners as boys at Blackfoot High School. Recipients Sam Woodruff Russell Thomas Ervine Bills Elmer Womack and Aliee Conway top the list. Second honors include Margaret Ormond Clara Clark Homer Ward Lucile Ireland Aston Park Dorothy Peterson Toshiko Shiosaki Vaughton Smith Robert Swisher Harry Whitten Billy Jane Austin and Lois McDonald.
Jean Dayle ex cabaret entertainer stands trial for murder of Sam Frank Memphis jewelry auctioneer. Heavy crowd disrupts opening. Judge Moffat rules on access, jury voir dire to take at least a day. Dayle jailed since arrest after Frank was found slain in his Salt Lake City hotel room on December 6.
The Blackfoot team led by Bill Purchner, Ivan McClellan and Leland Beck beat McCammon on Wednesday at the local high school in a debate over whether chain stores are derogatory to American institutions. McCammon’s negative side included Della Sutton, Leon Green and Harvey Price. Walter Hoge, Wayne Booth and Clifton Peterson from a local firm argued the affirmative.
The Pocatello Chamber of Commerce schedules its first good will tour for May 6 to 8 1931 with trips to McCammon Lava Hot Springs Bancroft and other towns. At least 100 participants are expected, using large U P buses plus cars. Committee members include C E Griffiths Rae Stratford Parry Harrison and John W Foreman.
W H Jones a Malad pioneer and former deputy US marshal and Oneida County sheriff died at his home at 7 this morning at age 88. Survived by children T D Jones Ralph H Jones Jedd Jones Mrs J M Kerns F M Ray Oscar D Jones and Mrs Joe Tometz among others. Born Liverpool 1843 he came to America at seven and reached Salt Lake City after an overland trip from St Louis.
Louis Nadaba faced trial for alleged manufacture and possession under the national prohibition act. Others changed pleas to guilty and received sentences. Dorsey Yoachum pleaded guilty to two counts and was fined 100 dollars with four months in jail. J R Rohn pleaded to one count and paid 250 dollars. Anna Rohn and Mrs. Stevens saw cases dismissed or resolved. George Walters pleaded guilty with six months and 250 dollar fine. Mrs. Walters and Mrs. Frank Randall were dismissed from charges. Mabel Neal pleaded guilty to one count with 100 dollar fine. Earl Brave admitted guilt on three counts with 100 dollar fine and six months. Mildred Young was found guilty on three counts with 190 dollar fine and four months. Valdemar Christensen, Ted Coffin, and Clifford Orgill stood not guilty. Christensen’s trial set Friday, Coffin and Orgill to be tried Saturday.

Dispatches from Barcelona report a new Republican Catalanist party declaration advocating full autonomy and self-determination. It calls for separation from civil and ecclesiastical control over schools, promotion of Catalan language, protection of private property, and workers rights including fair wages and social insurance.
Rana Yaver Hanim, a new woman alderman, questions how clerks should wear Prince Alberts during marriage ceremonies for Turkish women. City fathers debate the issue as the first speech is delivered.
Henry Williams a 67 year old rancher in Los Angeles told a court he could not remember marrying two women but would plead guilty to bigamy. He said he would rather face prison than have two wives and was sentenced to one to ten years in San Quentin.
Police sought today the slayers of two men who died yesterday of bullet wounds. Roy B. Faulkner 20 a sailor gasped accident as he died in Long Beach after a bullet tore through his lungs. Myrtle Beach 18 his fiancee told police Faulkner and two other youths known to her as John and Red were engaged in racketeering and John wanted her for his girl.
A petition from the Society for the Prevention of Crime asks Governor Roosevelt and the New York legislature to authorize Samuel Seabury to launch a sweeping probe into city government. The effort, led by a citizen committee of one thousand, targets a cleaner city and criticizes the mayor's lax stance toward corruption.
Margaret Jollineau 19 an employee at a local hospital said she was attacked on the courthouse grounds by a young man who followed from the viaduct. The report was filed with police at 10 50 p m and an investigation began.
With the district contest opening tonight in Moreland, Pocatello teams face Moreland in two matchups. The district schedule lists March 17 McCammon March 18 Blackfoot March 20 Malad March 23 Aberdeen and March 25 Preston.

Washington March 12 Despite unsatisfactory market conditions growers in early potato states plan increased acreage this spring. The agricultural department estimates total plantings in 19 states at 350 580 acres up from last year and a five year average. If all states rise six percent yields could reach 421 million bushels vs 361 million last year as old stocks are ample to depress prices. Twin Falls Idaho growers at four meetings heard H E Drobish Boise secretary of the Pacific Northwest Potato committee urge restraint to prevent a market glut for this year.
Prescott Arizona March 12 Sam Terrin a local prizefighter died after a bout with John Henry of Phoenix Henry an African American middleweight delivered a left to Terrins heart area and a right to the jaw in the fourth round Terrin collapsed and died a few minutes later Henry was held for a coroner inquest Mrs Terrin was ringside today.
