News from New York and London reports a global coal strike potential as negotiations between US coal workers and employers stall. With over a million Briton miners on strike and 150000 German miners voting to quit, Europe faces severe shortages and rising living costs.
A coal strike began in Westphalian mines as about 50 percent of 350,000 miners refused to work. In some districts the stoppage was near total, while in others only 15 to 30 percent joined.
Official figures from the mines in the district show 170,868 miners employed with 122,109 continuing to work. The strike is fairly general in eastern Westphalia, and non-strikers are not being molested.
In Lawrence Massachusetts on March 11 a large demonstration gathered in front of the police station when a woman striker was arrested. Police used clubs as the crowd grew unruly and the woman allegedly displayed a revolver during picketing. The event marked the largest picket line since the strike began with an estimated 5000 participants.
