Scandinavia moves toward joining the Atlantic pact as Norway rejects a Soviet non aggression offer and Denmark weighs formal participation. Sweden stays out for now with hints it may join within months amid Arctic security tensions and Communist agitation in Finnmark.
Pocatello residents would pay one dollar monthly for residential garbage pickup and five dollars for daily business pickups under a proposed ordinance. The council estimates about 5,300 dwellings and 150 eligible businesses. Collections would go weekly in residences with monthly alley cleanups, expanding beyond garbage to all waste. Mayor Phillips notes current costs around 45000 annually. proposed fees aim to save funds and improve service. The council approved moving toward drafting the ordinance for next session.
Gov. C. A. Robins summed 11 major achievements as the session adjourned sine die. Highlights include resistance to further gambling under state sponsorship and a call to repeal the 1947 slot machine law, with some bills failing in committee.
Pocatello superintendent George N. Green reports Senator Glen Taylor urged restoration of a $44,500 Landis Act item cut by Congress. Pocatello district has received $19,535 in federal funds as enrollment exceeds expectations by about 307 pupils daily compared with last year.
A committee of 31 Pocatello women’s clubs asked the city council to lease the clubhouse at the municipal golf course for five to 10 years. They plan to form a non profit association to fund improvements and use the second floor as a permanent year round home. The council signaled approval of a five year lease with possible renewal for five more years.
Blackfoot youths Charles Hutchinson and Kay Hopla pleaded guilty to breaking into the Wagon Wheel Case on February 21 with intent to commit burglary. They appeared before District Judge Preston Thatcher. Sentence postponed pending information on a second charge.
American Falls advanced to the finals by a 37 22 win over Inkom in the southeastern Idaho round. Tom Bell scored 12 for Inkom while Payne Schroeder and Thompson each had six for American Falls as both sides endured long play and fatigue. Inkom earns a third place trophy for their stellar showing.
John F. McGovern, head of the National Canners association, says there is little danger of a recession. He notes farmers being out of debt as a major factor contributing to current economic stability.
Nine Germans were killed and 16 injured in a train collision near Eisenach in the Russian zone of Germany, reported by the Soviet official newspaper Taerlliche Rundschau.

City council amended the taxicab ordinance establishing lower zone rates for three local firms, set cab numbers to 21, and rejected Alameda Taxicab Service’s entry permit. Utah and Idaho sugar beet growers will produce next season under the same contract as last year. Associations reached agreements with Utah-Idaho Sugar, Layton Sugar, and Amalgamated Sugar to be recommended to members. A sliding scale based on sugar content will set pay, with no exact price per ton possible due to discontinued government support.
Grant L. Stowell declares his candidacy for mayor of Pocatello after friends filed petitions and collected signatures. A longtime resident since 1920, he led civic and church work, served on the school board, and previously ran for mayor, losing to C. D. Moore. He heads Real Estate and Insurance Exchange at 414 West Center.
Idaho lawmakers near adjournment as final bills move through the Senate and House. The $5,406,000 building fund bill, including a Liberal Arts building and gym unit at Idaho State College, passed and awaits the governor's signature.
Two more candidates entered the councilman race today. Nominating petitions were drawn by James Bangs, a local stationer, and by Friends of James M. Franklin, a pharmacy student, with petitions obtained for him.
New Orleans police say Louis Eugene Hoover 25 of Louisville Kentucky beat and strangled millionaire James Mahoney. Investigators continue to probe multiple angles as acting Police Superintendent Scheuering states Hoover statements are not a confession and the case remains open.
Two ranch workers sleeping in a camp wagon with a defective coal stove were poisoned by carbon monoxide. One man, Sam Zinko, died at the Crooked Beach ranch southwest of Jordan Valley before a physician arrived. Joe Yturri Mendizona survived and was taken to an Ontario hospital.
