Congress plans to recess by Wednesday after two and a half days of work amid final efforts on an appropriation bill and a likely presidential veto of Muscle Shoals. House moves to pass a 90 percent immigration cut as Senate peers push to approve before adjournment.
Rio Grande Southern bondholders petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to withhold consent to the Denver and Salt Lake sale unless D&RGW would buy the Southern line. The protest urged protecting rights of short-line customers across Colorado and Utah. No action was taken by the commission.
In Los Angeles on March 2 executives of major oil firms forecast further price cuts to regain customers at the standard 14 1/2 cents a gallon after independents offered bootleg fuel at 12 to 14 1/2 cents. Independent dealers could drop to 8 cents if needed as the larger firms had reduced prices by 6 cents in the past week.
An array of lawyers assembled in Hillsboro Oregon for the murder trial of Nelson C Bowles and his former secretary Irma G Loucks. Both defendants claim Mrs Bowles died by her own hand after a November visit to Miss Loucks apartment. The body was moved to an undertaking establishment before authorities were notified prompting the investigation and arrest. The case was moved to Washington County Superior Court with extra jurors and deputies to keep order as crowds gathered from Portland.
Edna May Cooper famed actress and aviatrix missing from Hollywood a week was found at Monterey hospital with minor bruises and memory loss. She could not recall how she arrived or her planned destination. Identified by Mrs Ruth Morris sister of Gouverneur Morris.
With only 10 days left in the current session, Utah legislators face final passage of the taxation package adopted by voters last fall. Only the personal income tax measure had passed both houses. the corporation tax bill and several other tax bills lacked final approval. Key items include the 950 page State code commission report, the general appropriation bill, and the general revenue measure, none yet introduced.
In a Santa Monica letter dated March 2 Will Rogers mocks wartime finances arguing soldiers’ pay looks earned while big financiers claim it harms the economy. He compares Hog Island costs to the war bonus, noting debt burdens for government and individuals and calling borrowing a constant necessity.
A conference of progressives from both parties is planned in Washington on March 11 for a roundtable discussion. Sponsored by five senators Norris of Nebraska Lafollette of Wisconsin Cutting of New Mexico Wheeler of Montana and Costigan of Colorado, the meeting aims to study causes and cures for low mood without forming a third party. Five governors Roosevelt Pinchot Meier Lafollette Olsen have signaled attendance. Topics include unemployment insurance and anti injunction legislation.
Four hundred farmers from Riverton and nearby areas appealed to the Federal Land Bank at Berkeley and the Utah State Land Board for a two year moratorium on mortgage payments. They seek suspension of principal and interest until they can meet obligations and want foreclosure buyers given relief to reacquire land.
Burglars rifled the home of 8 G Thomas at 153 Taft avenue Alameda Sunday evening stealing between 1500 and 1600 in cash. The loot included Saturday receipts from Thomas store at 159 Taft avenue. Money hidden in a radio set. Police and sheriff’s force investigate.
The Utah forecast shows only a slight drop in temperatures tonight and Tuesday with minimal variation as cold air lingers across the region. Skies remain unsettled with light winds and brief chances of showers in western counties.

On March 2 in Moscow fourteen leaders of the Russian Social Democratic party began detailed confessions on the witness stand after pleading guilty to plotting overthrow of the Soviet government by sabotage and foreign intervention. Prosecutor Krylenko led a five-part examination on organization, foreign activity, counter-revolutionary links, sabotage, and documentary evidence.

Bakes as director of insurance, Utah quo warranto suits against Booth and Hammond, Gov Ross sidelined by illness, Arequipa rejecting Peru’s provisional government, and Hawley resolution for Ways and Means inquiry into oil coal lumber and other commodities advancing to the Senate.

Washington March 2 1930 President Hoover was not expected to act today on the Norris Muscle Shoals bill in an otherwise routine congressional week labeled by officials as a calm day for the administration with no decisive steps anticipated on the measure.
Edward Dillon known as Teddy, a St Louis man once central to the case of his father Dr William A Dillon who was found shot to death, was taken by Chicago police after a hotel holdup. Police said five victims identified him and Dillon admitted previous sentences in Sing Sing and Elmira.
The dean of the house Henry A Cooper an 80 year old Wisconsin Republican progressive died in Washington after a bitter house session. He had served since 1893 with a break after the sixtieths and was reelected to the seventy second congress. Cooper led northwest progressives and supported elder Lafollette. The house adjourned in tribute.
Salt Lake City March 2 Dr Frederick Dunn superintendent states in a letter to the legislature that the urgent need of the state hospital for the insane is a new receiving and hospital building rather than enlarging the medical staff.
Gandhi, exhausted yet cheerful, reports progress after talks with the viceroy on India’s policies. He plans to meet Sir George Schuster on safeguards for an Indian constitution and will see the viceroy again before a likely decision by midweek on peace or continued unsettled state.

Philadelphia police seized $200,000 worth of private liquor stock from Daniel Dever 80 during raids at his West Philadelphia home and city clubs. The haul includes 50 barrels of rye whiskey 15 barrels of port and brands such as Old Monopole Three Star Hennessey Mount Vernon plus a 1896 Scotch. Dever posted $1500 bail for further hearing. a trust fund of about $2 million supports his four daughters.
Senate agriculture committee approved a resolution for a senatorial inquiry into agricultural conditions. It would report to the next session of Congress and provides 5000 for the inquiry, excluding farm board operations. Introduced by Senator Wheeler, the Democrat from Montana.
Washington reports a $1.4 billion financing plan to cut annual interest by about ten million. The issue includes $500 million of 12 year bonds at low rates, $300 million six month notes, and $600 million one year two percent certificates. Proceeds retire $1.1 billion of notes and support veteran loans. Tax receipts expected as March 15 approaches.
