Two men face indictment in Los Angeles on charges of conspiring to provide U S navy information to Japan. Defendants are Harry Thomas Thompson, a former U S petty officer, and Toshio Miyazaki, named as a lieutenant commander in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
A federal indictment unsealed reveals Thompson, jailed for wearing a naval officer’s uniform, allegedly obtained defense documents from Miyazaki and planned to use them against the United States. The drought worsens in North Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska with record heat and grasshopper swarms.
Louise Wixom, seventeen month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Wixom, owed her life to Elwood Manwaring who pulled her from an irrigation ditch, restored breathing, and kept her alive with help from her mother Mrs Orson Manwaring. The child showed signs of recovery the same day.
The Days of Old Fort Hall celebration committee will give the first 100 entrants free tickets to the fireworks show. Entries are accepted at the chamber of commerce offices. Pets including dogs birds and reptiles may parade on July 2 with prizes for best exhibits and other awards for participants.
Gov. Alf M. Landon of Kansas arrived in Denver with family for a Colorado vacation. He declined to discuss politics at a brief press conference and joked about using worms while fishing near Estes Park during a 10 day stay at a leased ranch. Colorado Gov. Ed C. Johnson greeted him as a cheering crowd gathered.
In Washington on June 25, the president signed a bill to establish a game management supply depot and laboratory at Pocatello Idaho. The law enables federal purchase of lands and buildings currently used by a bait mixing station as part of a $110,000 project. Pocatello will be a central operating point for the western states program of the U S bureau of biological survey.
Frank G. Martines of Richfield, president of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah, reports Salt Lake City is removed from U S 50 and placed on U S 89 after a Chicago highway officials meeting. U S 50 becomes Roosevelt highway No 6 through Utah from Grand Junction to Ely and Tonopah Nevada, while U S 89 now runs through Provo and Ogden to Ogden and Logan areas.
Secretary Morgenthau dismissed reporters questions about Gov. Landon’s sunflower emblem and his upcoming farm trip, saying he would be back from his farm next week and offering no comment on the symbol at the press conference.
Dr Francis E Townend indicated the old age pension movement may launch a presidential candidate. A convention July 15 19 in Cleveland will decide on action with Lemke Union party ties and possible endorsements. Townsend said the movement could move quickly to gain ballot access where possible and back other candidates where not. He noted Chicago HQ said membership nears 10 9 million with Pacific coast strength at 24 million.
Boise June 25 Work on 24 Canyon county WPA projects employing 352 men and 105 women was suspended by state director J L Hood to aid relief workers harvesting peas. The suspension will likely last a week and all WPA labor is mobilized to prevent losses from farm labor shortages as Dean Miller WPA employment chief stated.
Senator Borah of Idaho spoke at a press conference on the Philadelphia Democratic convention and the Union party. He said he had no statement on whom he would support and that the Union party is debatable as to which major party it would hurt most. He praised Father Coughlin’s ally Lemke and cautioned that the court is not above criticism, though current attacks are milder than those after the Civil War.
Los Angeles reveals actor Arthur McLagien, brother of Victor McLagien, lists liabilities of 1940 and assets of 60 in a voluntary petition filed today in bankruptcy court.
Mrs Daniel Cook of Rexburg Idaho is noted as the daughter in a brief obituary item for Louisa Fisher Senior aged 81. The piece mentions a quoted remark and identifies one daughter.
United States ambassador to China Nelson T Jehinson filed a formal protest with the Japanese embassy over rude acts by Japanese soldiers during a military display in Peiping. Washington instructed the embassy to obtain a formal reply from the Japanese commandant. Mexico City June 25 Left Wing Leader Luis Mora Tovar ordered congressional deputies to park their guns or stay outside. The ban takes effect when Congress convenes in September and deputies carrying firearms will be barred from debates. A similar order was issued after last year's chamber shootings but enforcement was lax.
The Democratic convention program lists events from morning rules debates on two thirds nominating rules to the call to order by Senator Joseph T. Robinson and platform committee actions. Friday’s agenda includes nominating speeches led by John E Mack for Franklin D. Roosevelt, with roll call and subsequent speeches.

A rule change for future convention apportionment favors Democratic strength in states over total population, with Southern bloc influence and sealed platform talks.
Washington reports that more than 500 million dollars in bonus bond trade ins were paid to veterans this week. C B Eilenberger said many cash part of bonds while keeping rest as investment. Bonds earn 3 percent interest and about 1.57 million veterans asked cash through 119 of 248 paying post offices.
Colonel Arthur Lee Yowell rode a Texas donkey into Vice President Garner's campaign suite in Philadelphia. Security stopped him at the door after initial permission. After a round of applause the animal entered the Garner headquarters and caused a disturbance before leaving with the colonel.
Seventeen of nineteen government weather stations in drought struck North Dakota today reported results as of June 25. The data reflect widespread dryness and rising concern over local crops and water reserves.
