U S leaders were told Roosevelt wants wealth taxes enacted this session. Senator Borah called the program sound in principle and urged action. Speaker Byrnes indicated support for moving taxes now and avoiding prolonged hearings, with focus on rates and scope.
Idaho's PWA program to go into operation after July 1 with at least 10 percent of the state allocation to be employed by month’s end. Leo Hood, Pocatello works progress director, said no delays in project approvals and that state directors can approve submissions, pending Washington review and treasury allocation. Hood will join a regional conference of western progress directors in Salt Lake on July 1.
United States Spanish War veterans and auxiliary begin the eighth annual convention in Boise with a joint session. Governor Ross and Mayor Hyatt welcome visitors. George F. Carson and Mrs. Marie L. Barnes respond. Ralph Edmunds addresses the group. Banquet planned for tonight. elections and reports set for tomorrow.
The Taylor Mining company plant in Stockton California was destroyed by a blaze early today. The ensuing damage is estimated at about 400000, with all machinery and a large quantity of grain in two buildings lost.
Scores from majors across cities show multiple games with varied innings. Notable matchups include Chicago versus Boston, St Louis against Philadelphia, Detroit hosting Washington, and New York versus Chicago with staggered scoring by inning. Remaining schedule lists only one game.
In Idaho Falls on June 24 a Mexican man Jesus Ramos 28 reportedly confessed to killing Jose Rodriguez 28 with a butcher knife in self defense. Witnesses corroborate the statement and an inquest may be ordered by Sheriff Porter. Rodriguez died from a severed artery after the alleged stabbing in Ramos rooms.
North Baptist Church members in Colorado Springs adopt a broad anti evil resolutions package. The assembly considers a 1936 convention slate with Dr. J. H. Franklin nominated for 1937 president and debates church political involvement, child labor, anti lynching, and repression of religion in Russia.
The Utah-Idaho Lions district convention opened in Richfield with several hundred delegates from Utah and Idaho. City attorney Henry E. Beale welcomed attendees, C Sumner Pond of Grace Idaho responded, and Vincent C Hascall of Omaha president of Lions International attended. Committees, guest introductions and club presidents highlighted the morning. Hascall spoke in the afternoon before a parade by members and bands.
Idaho forecast notes a pair of temperature shifts with cooler conditions easing into the southeast portion tonight. The pattern suggests varied overnight readings as a cool air mass moves through the region.
Italian sources say Mussolini will press for Ethiopia’s expulsion from the League of Nations and occupation by Italy as part of a so called complete solution. He may demand tougher terms if Eden raises the Italo Ethiopian dispute during talks. Mussolini risks widening rift over naval accord and Ogaden rumors rejected.
Governor Ross returns to Boise after northern Idaho talks on highway construction and business conditions. He says crops are fair and prices improved, with broad support for the sales tax and liquor control act, noting even former prohibitionists consider the system the best possible given liquor’s necessity.
Three unmasked gunmen robbed the Blue Springs State Bank of about $600 to $700 this morning and fled east in a light sedan. In Eas, six bank workers were locked in a vault after three men robbed the Farmers State Bank of $3000 and escaped. Also brief Utah weather notes a fair night and cooler southwesterly winds.
In Tacoma on June 24 Judge Cushman scheduled Mrs Margaret Waley for trial on July 5 for kidnaping and conspiracy in the 200000 abduction of nine year old George Weyerhaeuser. Testimony begins July 9 with jury impanelling to follow. Waley's co indictment on extortion to be decided July 5. Her husband Harmon Waley, serving 45 years at McNeil Island, may testify in her defense.
Beverly Hills writer Ain Raper relays Will Rogers and Senator Joe Robinson's views on delaying the proposed levy on the rich. Rogers mocks postponement, urging a current session clinic to reveal costs, arguing business suffers from uncertainty and fear of the next session.
Denver police investigated the fatal shooting of Arthur P. Ware Jr., 23, found dead in his car on a residential street after an elaborate society reception. Patrolman Ernest Ayers, initially tied to the scene, was jailed for inquiry as investigators probe memory gaps and the presence of a gun and a bed sheet in the vehicle.
Hundreds of lumber pickets were dispersed by state patrolmen with clubs and tear gas near Tacoma’s sawmill district. National guardsmen stood by as authorities reported plans to bring 200 to 300 Communists into the city, while Longshoremen refused to load ships under guard presence.
Commissioner H E Warren accuses police officials of sensational ties to a race horse lottery ring and illicit activities. He demands resignations for four officials and suspends five including Chief Culligan, saying more actions may follow.
Skyline club members summited Bannock peak 8321 feet near Arbon valley. They enjoyed woodland scenery and plan a hike through Ross creek canyon to Putman peaks next Sunday. The group departs the telephone building at 7 30 a m for the Peak area.
Delbert Green, condemned for the triple murder of his uncle and two women, wins an insanity hearing set for July 1 by Judge Herbert M. Schiller. The stay delays his execution scheduled for next Wednesday after the parole board refused to commute. Attorney Arthur Woolley urged the delay as Green's appeal continues.
