Roosevelt abandons the Chicago convention and plans a new third party named Progressive Republicans Taft expected to dominate the event Roosevelt backers react with loud chants as contests are disposed of at the gathering
In Chicago on June 22 the Republican national convention ended contest battles with Taft forces prevailing. Henry J. Allen of Kansas read Roosevelt’s valedictory, prompting a lengthy but orderly demonstration by Roosevelt delegates. The chair quelled the crowd after about twenty minutes.
Chicago June 22 delegates grapple with credentials disputes as Taft supporters win seating in Washington and Mississippi contests. The convention delays final nominations, with Roosevelt not yet fully ruled in or out and sessions planned through Sunday if needed.
Moses Brinkerhoff, age 87, died May 26 at his Spokane home after a three week illness. One of the United States longest serving railroad men, he began as a brakeman on the New York Central in 1842, later worked on the Lake Shore Mississippi system and the Panama railroad where he saved a bullion train. He joined Northern Pacific as a conductor and, after losing hearing, was pensioned 30 years ago but served as Fargo coal agent before moving to Spokane. Kane Lodge A M and F had charge of burial.
Dr. P Hall of Nebraska says Bryan will not back down in opposing Parker for temporary convention chairmanship. He confirms candidates have not sided, but Bryan plans to carry the fight to the convention floor as supporters of Oscar W Underwood converge on Baltimore from Alabama.
Chicago June 22 bunko men sold monogrammed written requests signed with President Tafts name to admit holders to sessions. Josiah Hartnett of Arkansas bought one at the Coliseum for ten dollars from a man posing as Tafts friend. Police found more than twenty such passports at various doors.
Los Angeles report says District Attorney Fredericks interrupted the Darrow trial citing an attempt to hypnotize a state witness. Laughter followed a brief recess as Harrington, the witness, was taunted about facing Darrow or Rogers. Darrow warned he would hypnotize the witness as with others.
Spokane's R E Buchanan, a state legislator and traveling auditor for the State Industrial Insurance Commission, wrestled a wounded 350 pound black bear near Metaline after a gun misfire. He boasted a bear pelt and 25 in gold prize money from a tavern keeper.
Winthrop Mass June 22 ceremonies mark the impending cutting of the historic Gibbons Elm next week. The event, led by the Winthrop Historical Society, drew members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts and local residents.
Weekend events feature McNichols Wright hall dance and Chau tauqua week opening. Sugar City faces Pocatello in baseball at Brady park. Lectures, concerts by Hyde orchestra Schumann Quintet and Idaho Sunday school convention. Motion pictures run all week at Auditorum Princip s Orpheum and Olympic theatres.
Idaho leaders consider an August convention as Gem State delegates split over support for Borah or Cummins while pledging not to bolt. Flinn proposes a plan to use the Electoral College amid talk of a mass meeting to form a new party.
Chicago June 22 Ormsby McHarge said Roosevelt will not be presented by his friends to the current convention. Prendergast will not deliver nominating speech as Roosevelt severs ties with the convention and plans a new party. He urges delegates to abstain from voting but would not relieve them of pledges if they vote. Roosevelt began meetings with seated delegates around noon, Alabama delegates admitted first, with talks expected to run several hours.
