Washington reports the public building bill clears the House adding one hundred thousand dollars for a Pocatello building. Senate passage expected. Also noted are five million dollars more in authorizations and Taft's push to pass the postal savings bank measure amid a looming filibuster.
President Taft told Senators Borah and three western colleagues he would not sign the withdrawal bill until both houses pass a bill providing at least 20 million dollars for irrigation. The senate then removed the 30 million dollar amendment from the conservation bill and sent the withdrawal bill back to the house. The house will take up the 20 million irrigation measure tomorrow.
Washington June 21 The House, after a fight led by Representative Hamer, passed a Senate-approved bill allowing assignment of homestead entries on government irrigation projects. An amendment restricting to qualified homestead entrymen was withdrawn by the committee, making assignments open to anyone once enacted into law.
The senate approved the general deficiency bill the last regular supply measure awaiting congress approval this session. It allocates nearly eight million dollars in appropriations, about one point eight million more than the house version.
A brief forecast notes fair and cooler conditions tonight with a Wednesday rise in temperatures. The outlook calls for continued fair weather and warmer readings ahead during the midweek period.
Judge Frank Dietrich rules in United States vs Minidoka & Southwestern Railroad that government cannot stop the steam line across the Minidoka irrigation project. The injunction sought by the government to prohibit crossing is denied.
Judge Dietrich upholds federal power allowing railroads to cross government land with rights of way, provided crossings of roads streams canals and other safeguards are maintained. The decision speeds the completion of the railroad across the Minidoka project and imposes liability for any damage if precautions are not followed.
Area June 21 The consulting engineers Ford and Bacon of San Francisco for Kuhn Loeb Co and J. P. Morgan Co praised the Big Lost River irrigation system after a thorough review from the Mackay dam to the Powell tract. They called it the best system examined and urged confidence that the valley will rival established irrigation regions.
Chicago, June 21 The defense abruptly rested in the Browne bribery case amid an election of United States Senator William Lorimer. The move came after a dispute among Browne’s lawyers over a judge’s ruling, leading to sudden termination of testimony.
Theodore Roosevelt today arranged a reception at his editorial offices in Oyster Bay for a committee from the Hamilton club of Chicago. He will travel to Chicago later this summer as a guest of the club to give what will likely be his first speech.
Washington June 21 The hees bill authorizing the retirement of Justice Moody was passed by the Senate today without conference. The measure now goes to the president for his signature.
William Krug vice president and general manager of Frederick Krug Brewing company was killed in an automobile accident in Omaha on June 21.
George D. Casto former Oneida Stake Academy teacher and Preston justice of the peace admits authorship of alleged Salt Lake Tribune letters slandering President Parkinson and others. He declares the writings vile and wrong and seeks forgiveness and redirection after being misled by others.
Nevada authorities debate prize fighting legality as Governor presses for clarity while the Ogden report notes silence in law. Officials consider whether regulated bouts can occur without explicit statutes. Public interest grows as lawmakers weigh public safety and athletic concerns.
Tex Rickard announced Reno would host the Jeffries Johnson bout. Preparations for an arena were immediately started as the selection was made publicly in Reno.
Rickard praised Goldfield business men but chose Reno for the Jeffries Johnson bout to attract larger crowds and avoid a long desert trip. Governor Dickerson, arriving from Ontario, said Nevada law licenses prize fights and he cannot stop the big contest unless there is evidence of a fake fight.
The Eagles carnival opened on East Center street between Fourth and Fifth avenues attracting large initial attendance. Parker Amusement Company provides attractions for the local Eagles lodge, with new offerings this year. The show is refined and clean, running for the rest of the week.
Casto Geo D of Richfield aged about thirty admitted on Saturday evening to writing the scurrilous Tribune letters. He taught at Oneida Stake academy in 1905 1906 and later worked around town including Preston News. He taught in Weston Idaho last year and is a member of the Mormon church with two years missionary service in the northern states mission.
George W. Fuller of New York spoke to Pocatello businessmen at the Commercial club rooms about bonds for a proposed sewerage system. He endorsed the plans by City Engineer Sammis, urged a main trunk line with uniform front-foot charges, and said storm and sanitary sewers are needed for growth and health.
El Paso reports that the Mexican government seeks aid from the United States to secure the frontier amid a looming uprising in Mexican states. All women residents of Naco Sonora were moved across the border to Arizona and sheltered at the Mexican consul’s home under Arizona police guard.
