Pin swallowed by Ark girl removed from lung

An open safety pin swallowed by 18 year old Katherine Norwood of Lexa Arkansas nine years ago has been removed from her lung at Temple University Hospital. The medical director said she is doing very nicely. The pin was swallowed in 1930 and first caused no symptoms until recently when an X ray showed it near the heart.

Mystery Prisoner Visits Embassy in Moscow

Ruth Marie Rubens, a Soviet Russian mystery prisoner, visited the U S embassy in Moscow on business. She was convicted on June 9 for entering the country with a false passport and reportedly freed after an 18 month sentence. Her husband, arrested with her in December 1937 on espionage suspicions, is unaccounted for.

Pocatello Engineer Dies After Crash at Rigby Crossing

Lester Barnes a 53 year old Pocatello railroad engineer sacrificed his life attempting to brake a train to avoid a collision with a gasoline truck near Rigby Idaho. The truck driver Arthur Hobbs 35 escaped injury while a passenger Blossom Short 22 suffered a bruised arm. The crash ignited 3600 gallons of fuel setting a nearby farm house ablaze. Coroner- railroad and ICC officials continue investigation with testimony taken in Rigby and Pocatello. Funeral services set for Barnes Wednesday at 2 p m at the Third Ward Church.

Girl Hurt in Fairground Ride Accident

Donna Fullmer, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs H E Fullmer of Blackfoot, was seriously injured at the Eastern Idaho district fairgrounds during a concession ride. She suffered a brain concussion and remained unconscious the next morning. The accident’s cause was not yet determined.

Boys Head To Camp Tenday For Two-Week Session

Between sixty and seventy boys depart Monday for Camp Tenday under the Pocatello Child Welfare association. A following two-week outing for girls will be held at the same camp. Hazardous device blast kills eighteen in Haifa market

In Haifa the explosion of a hazardous device at the Arab marketplace killed eighteen people and wounded twenty four. The blast damaged the Haifa telephone exchange and public booths, with a curfew and military crackdown imposed as troops and police stood to duty.

Talks on Rackets Warn of Wide Fraud Schemes

Crime expert A W Dittmore told the retail bureau of the chamber of commerce that about 2200 rackets and schemes to defraud citizens are active nationwide. He urged financing a school on rackets for police instruction and public awareness, but the bureau delayed action because of Pocatello events this week. Dittmore noted many thieves trade in stolen goods and that thousands of men and women operate rackets while traveling to victimize business people and citizens.

Open Canning Plant In WPA Building At Bonneville

The board of county commissions announced the opening of a WPA canning project in the WPA building at 335 East Bonneville. Under the plan all produce and fruit furnished will be canned on a 30 70 basis with materials provided to be canned. relief uses receive 70 cans. The project has been popular in prior years and supplies food for relief rolls.

Chinese Bury Aged Fire Victim Interment of Chin Sing Held at Mountainview Cemetery

Chin Sing a 100-year-old Chinese resident died in a house fire at 150 N Second Ave. Interment was held at Mountainview Cemetery this afternoon with burial arranged by local countrymen. Police Chief R M Pugmire and officers investigated the blaze, finding Sing on the floor beside a lamp and stove. Coroner Arthur W Hall ruled the death accidental after determining possible smoke inhalation or heart issue.

Murderer of Child to Face Charges

Fremont Ohio June 19 Prosecutor A L Hyzer announced filing a first degree murder charge against Velma Baker Fink for killing her ten week old son Haldon Fink. Sheriff Myers said she confessed after which two women were sworn as jail matrons to watch her. The baby’s body was found in Green Creek after she drove from Clyde and threw the child from a bridge.

Tornado Kills Nine Near Minneapolis and Damages Seven Towns

Pioneer Local Woman Nan Hull Dies in Los Angeles

Nan Carrol Hull, wife of John J. Hull and long prominent Pocatello resident, died Sunday in Los Angeles after recent illness. The Hulls, early Idaho civic figures, moved from Pocatello to Los Angeles in 1921, where Mrs. Hull was active in Catholic circles and civic groups. She is survived by her husband and other family.
