In Clermont-Ferrand and Paris clashes between police and strikers left hundreds wounded and thousands on strike. police and soldiers patrolled streets as 10 plane loads of troops were awaited. the National Assembly suspended amid protests led by Communist unions.
Henry A. Wallace, third party candidate, is expected for a second Gate City visit in late June to discuss suppression of free speech. Jeff Masters, Wallace-Taylor chair, notes plans depend on confirmation and that Wallace may travel from Coeur d'Alene after a prior stop in Pocatello and testimony on Mundt-Nixon.
President Truman campaigns through Kansas urging voters to defeat Congress as Republicans face a braced election. In Washington the House votes to require a one year draft and considers amendments limiting service, with a Senate already leaning toward a similar plan.
Congress both houses passed and overrode President Truman on three vetoes in one day. An appropriations bill with a rider transferring the U S employment service to the federal security agency became law, while the Bulwinkle rail rate bill also cleared over veto. The votes marked Truman’s 29th and 137th vetoes since January and his administration objected to the employment service transfer as a serious error.
Allen R. Hart, 32, an electrician on the Vanport dike, is identified among the flood dead as the Columbia River falls to relieve pressure. The official death toll reaches 45 with 29 still reported missing from Vanport. Water remains high in Vancouver and Wenatchee while crews wind down dike duties and civilians and troops stay alert.

He said he would veto a U S backed plan and noted France China Belgium backed the United States alongside Britain and Canada.
Dorothy Manning of Pocatello was elected first vice president of the State Federation of Business and Professional Women at their Sun Valley convention last week. The Pocatello delegation included Miss Manning and several chapter officers. the convention adopted a new constitution and Mildred Burgess of New York City spoke as BPW United Nations representative. The delegation met President Truman during the Sun Valley visit.
Pocatello police detain an Idaho State University married father after he allegedly warned a local married woman he would release a compromising photo unless she paid $200 at Ross Park. He confessed to tracing the couple’s car and contacting the woman.
The City Council repealed ordinance 1088 granting Union Pacific the right to vacate parts of Shoshone Avenue after three readings. The move ends the council role in the dispute, shifting the case back to citizens and the railroad. Union Pacific and property owners clash over damages and future rights, with attorneys expressing opposing views.
Senate and House conferees reached a compromise on the 1949 interior department appropriation totaling about 400 million dollars. The agreement keeps safeguards on reclamation and Bonneville projects and retains holdback rules, with final totals to be tallied by clerks.
Authorities in the Malay federation ordered the immediate evacuation of all European women and children from Sungei Seput district as communists are blamed for terror. High Commissioner Sir Edward Gent declared a state of emergency across Sungei Seput and three other rich rubber areas after Chinese gunmen killed three British planters and two prominent Chinese, raising the toll to five.
Washington notes compare political prognostication methods with crystal ball systems. Several methods yield different winner names, favoring candidates with double letters in their names, citing past examples from McKinley to Truman and speculating on Harold Stassen and Earl Warren versus Dewey and Taft.

Caldwell posted the largest regional gain, up almost 407 percent. northwestern totals rose 38 percent to 60 282 495.
