Secretary of Labor Schwellenbach 53 died in Walter Reed hospital after a long illness. President Truman mourned him as a great senator and judge and Secretary of Labor. Funeral plans announced for National Cathedral in Washington and burial in Seattle with services at Trinity Church.

Truman Calls On West for Power Fight

President Truman urged the Pacific Northwest to wage a tough fight in Congress to develop river basins for flood control and cheap power. He pledged to battle private power lobbyists and funds cuts, citing Shasta dam transmission needs and flood devastation near Portland.

Lions Club to hear convention reports and film

North Idaho Flood Aid Fast Funds Set By State Board

Idaho’s board of examiners quickly released 100000 from the general fund to aid flood ravaged northern counties. Boundary county led with a 25000 request plus 15000 for current expenses 5000 for indigents and pensions and 5000 for the hospital fund. Similar requests from other counties may follow.

Idaho Life Security elects directors at Boise meeting

Idaho Life Security corporation re elected Dr. E. L. White of Lewiston and Cy Holden of Idaho Falls to its board at the annual stockholders meeting in Boise. The holding company backs the Security State Life Insurance Company of Idaho, the state’s only home owned old line life insurer. P. G. Batt of Caldwell serves as president of the life company. Nicholas Ifft of Pocatello attended the meeting as a director member.

Five Injured and One Dead in Utah Crash Near Ogden

A two car head on collision on U S 8 near Hot Springs injures five and kills E J Rice 32 of Brigham City. Mrs Rice 27 and Janice Kent 34 Ogden are in serious and fair condition respectively. George Hadfield 30 of Brigham City and his wife Silvia 27 are in fair condition with a six month old daughter Alana K Rice. Eldon Rice of Pocatello and Clarence Rice of Brigham City are among surviving relatives.

Summer theater plans organize in Pocatello

Funeral services held Thursday for Claude D. Bistline

Claude D. Bistline 58 a leading Pocatello civic figure died Monday night from a heart attack. Funeral rites Thursday at First Presbyterian church drew a full house with Dr J Willis Hamblin Presley and Rev Ed Con eregional church officiating. Interment followed at Mount Moriah Cemetery under Downard funeral home direction.

Blackfoot Reopens Swimming Pool After Summer Start

Blackfoot reopened its pool with over 150 children and several adults attending on a Wednesday afternoon. Manager Donald Stalker said the pool will be open daily 2 to 5 pm except Thursdays for cleaning. free lessons for all levels start the last week of June and run for one month. Lifeguard duty was covered by Mrs. Lona Mae Sorenson.

Republican panel to hold June 17 hearing in Philadelphia

A Republican National Committee subcommittee will meet June 17 in Philadelphia to resolve factional fights from Georgia and other states over convention seats. The panel is led by Earl White of Idaho and aims to settle争 disputes before the June convention.

Snake River Dam Proposed for Hells Canyon

Army engineers recommended a 710 foot high dam at Hells Canyon on the Snake River in Idaho with a 3 280 000 acre foot reservoir and 850 000 kilowatt capacity plus room for four more units. The project aims to power, flood control, limited irrigation, fish hatchery access roads, and recreation while using remaining upstream water.

The Senate approved a bill requiring men 18 to 25 to register for the draft and drafting those 19 to 25 for two years with a possible one year option for 18 year olds who volunteer. Senate approves navy construction bill details big project

The Senate passed a 209,782,903 navy bill by voice vote to authorize construction at multiple sites. It requires separate funding later and awaits House approval. Key items include a 30,000,000 air missile test center at Point Mugu California a 22,750,000 aeronautical turbine lab in Trenton New Jersey and a 12,000,000 airfield for the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
