President Truman denounces the communist coup in Hungary as an outrage and criticizes Senator Taft's economic philosophy as the "old idea of harm." He frames foreign and domestic policy in a harsh light, linking Cold War tensions to domestic economic thinking.
Parts of two midwestern states suffered heavy property damage as rivers rose after cloudbursts and torrential rains. Plattsmouth Nebraska faced five inches of rain and a flood five and a half feet deep, while Indianola Iowa saw five inches and Des Moines three inches. Residents near lowlands were urged to move as river levels were forecast to rise further.
A 16 year old Oakland high school girl accuses two patrolmen, Robert Bell and Edward Bauer, of forcing intimate acts after interrupting her with a boy in a car. Each faces two counts of statutory violation with up to 50 years’ maximum for a conviction. Both officers were suspended and jailed. the girl’s statement describes a prolonged coercive sequence in a patrol car. The mother filed the complaint. Bell admitted misconduct while Bauer denied touching the girl.
Mrs Edward Spalding of Lake Forest uses her year old Doberman Pinscher Brada as a caddy. Brada pulls a cart made from a child's tricycle and carries her clubs. The dog, trained with a harness, is quiet and helps search for balls in the rough.
Idaho State college commencement in Frazier hall honors 245 graduates including 23 from the college of pharmacy. Richard Kerr leads with high honors. Ellen Joy Bickmore George Thomas Murray Jr Harriet Hepworth also earn pharmacy degrees. Dr. Carl W. McIntosh presides as Warren Roth Polly Fitch Frank Kleffner Barbara Kelly and Thomas Hutchings win special prizes. Approximately 67 receive junior certificates in letters sciences and engineering and 19 to teach elementary.
Katherine McDougall, 14, of Pocatello, remained in serious condition at St. Luke's hospital after an automobile crash near Mountain Home Tuesday. Her sister Amelia, 15, was discharged. Father District Judge Isaac McDougall and twin brother William were confined with minor injuries but spent a comfortable night.
The Senate ratified the Italian treaty 79 to 10 and approved pacts with Romania Bulgaria and Hungary. Action followed President Truman denouncing Hungary’s coup as outrageous. Each treaty requires ratification by all Big Four powers before it becomes effective with troop withdrawals to follow within 90 days.
The weatherman reports scattered light showers and thunderstorms in the intermountain region with light rain across western states. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low near 45 and a high around 70 tomorrow, while east of the Rockies sees only light showers in the Great Lakes region. Sunset at 8 05 and sunrise at 4 51.
Gilbert St. Clair of Idaho Falls was unanimously nominated to lead the local American Legion post, succeeding James Brady, with an election set for June 16 unless opposition arises.

Keith Witte, 29, Yakima pilot, died when his light plane nosedived into a field near Sprague. Witnesses said the craft flew low over town then pitched into a steep bank and dropped to the ground.
National St Louis beat Boston five to three while New York surged to a 13 to 1 victory over Brooklyn Cincinnati and Philadelphia split with Chicago and Washington defeated Cleveland in a close 3 to 0 win Philadelphia shut out Cleveland 5 to 0 Chicago overcame Washington 23 to 1 in a high scoring contest and Pittsburgh fell to Brooklyn 3 to 0.

Western lawmakers debate tax cuts and farm programs. Senator Taylor of Idaho argues tax cuts put money in the pockets of the poor to boost spending. Representative Granger of Utah questions trimming the farm program, noting its role in stabilizing the farm and national economies.
Washington reports the CIO and the new telephone workers committee announce a battle to reorganize the nation’s telephone labor. NFTW leader Joseph Beirne accuses the CIO of raiding members while NFTW claims 177,399 workers hold charters and bets on 75,000 more joined before the Miami convention. Ted Silvey says the CIO will build a strong, not isolationist, union.
The agriculture department said it has resumed payments to farmers for potatoes turned over to the government last fall under the price support program. Payments had been halted around April 23 to assess available funds and determine if all payments could be made.
British and American officials prepared renewed demands sent to Soviet authorities to back a united nations probe into the Budapest crisis. Lieut. Gen. Sviridov had rejected prior requests for a three power inquiry. Western diplomats sought documents they say implicate Premier Nagy in a plot to topple the republic. Communist forces push to solidify control with patrols and crackdowns.
Utahns from the Fundamentalists group, four of fourteen inmates sentenced May 15, 1945 for unlawful cohabitation, will request paroles from the state board of pardons on June 21. The men are Arnold Boss 62 Louis A Kelsch 41 Morris Quincy Kunz 42 and Charles J Zitting 53.
Orion W. Gross northwest bowler and fight promoter arrested on a complaint charging him with conducting a gambling game. He posted a $10,000 surety bond and faced arraignment. Prosecutor Leslie M Carroll cited D. J. MacGillivray who pleaded guilty to embezzlement and claimed he lost $100,000 of clients’ money to bad investments and gambling. Gross is a former Northwest International Bowling Congress president and now runs Victory Boxing and BPOK.
J Edgar Hoover testified that the FBI questioned six people in a preliminary inquiry ordered by Attorney General Clark after a state grand jury indicted 78 for election law violations and ballot theft tied to the Democratic primary in which Enos Axtell defeated Roger Slaughter but lost in the general election. President Truman supported Axtell.
Spokane reports a Spokane International passenger train derailed in yard limits at Sandpoint. Crew and passengers escaped injury as the locomotive left the track and the baggage car front tracks derailed. Officials said tampering with a switch was suspected. The train moved about 10 mph and carried few passengers. service resumed after a short delay using another engine.
Funeral services set in Salt Lake City for Louis Sampson 85 a retired Nevada and Idaho sheep rancher who died yesterday. An early Nevada settler he operated sheep ranches in Nevada and Idaho and at one time with his brother ran as many as 100000 head on Spring Valley ranges.
Five hundred delegates arrived for the Idaho State Elks Association 25th annual convention in Caldwell. The program opened with ritual contests among Boise Lewiston Idaho Falls lodges, followed by a public memorial session at the high school auditorium with speaker Robert Lytle of Yale, Oregon.
Monroe Johnson, director of the Office of Defense Transportation, told western congressmen that western shippers are getting their fair share of boxcars and denied a monopoly. He warned a national scandal could arise if railroad equipment production isn’t investigated, and said grand jury inquiries need not uncover such a scandal.
Funeral services are pending for Earl Greenough 62 mining industry leader who served the war production board during the war in the tin lead and zinc branch. He died Tuesday night in Wallace after a career as Columbia University School of Mines graduate and head of Atlas Mining Mulean Idaho organizer of Atlas Mining company at Mullan Idaho in 1924.
N Henry A Wallace said in Raligh North Carolina that he would not support a reelection campaign for President Truman. The former vice president spoke at a press conference before a scheduled speech and was asked if he would back Truman, replying that it depended and that he would say no. He has criticized Truman's foreign policy toward Russia in ongoing crusades.
